Default XJS trim discrepancy

Hope I spelled that right. I recently picked up a pair of nos rear lenses from across the pond for my 91 xjs and they came with the chrome part by the boot painted satin black. It was neatly taped off to reveal the raised chrome part that is on the lens side. The thing is I've looked far and wide and have yet to see or remember seeing this chrome section painted. Does anyone know what year these were painted? It doesn't look too bad. I'm just wondering if this was done for ANY year as these were not necessarily for a 91 xjs, but, being brand new I thought they might be CORRECT for some year. Thanks! Buddyluv

The XJR-S had some body colored trim. Like the bumper blades, mirrors etc. But I didn't think the trim on the lights was painted...

All of the chrome on my car has been powder coated body color (black)

I've read that the first two years of production had the area between the tailights blacked out. I wonder if that light was for an early car? I actually saw a 76 while I was looking for mine and it was yellow (was told factory paint) with the black rear boot from the chrome strip on top to the plain black bumper. I seem to remember it being matte black in that spot, same as the area around the JAGUAR logo.
I;m having my car painted black and I'm masking off the same part and painting the flat portion black as well.

Default Taillight trim

Check out the JCNA judging guide for info and pics of the three versions there were. Lots of good info in there. My 77 has black in that area. Dave

Wow! This is the best piece of information I've ever received from a forum!! I've never found his website. It really answers questions I've had for years.
I was right about the black rear boot trim on early cars. Even to the matte black color! I guess the owner of the 76 yellow xjs was right about it being an original paint.
I can go back to my sunroof post and actually tell everyone they DID offer a factory sunroof in 87 only!!
Dave, you are a god among men!! Lol

Funny, I had to pull the judgeing guide up on my smart phone at our JCNA show last year to prove to the judge that coach lines WERE on some XJS's. Great resource.

@Dave

That is one pretty XJS...... more info please...... Those look like silverstone wheels from an XK8..... did they go straight on ? Also, It looks like you have done some modifications to the front bumper cover with the addition of faired in foglights?? I have a black XJS and have thought on more than one occasion that blackening the chrome might look nice...... Your pictures have confirmed that thought and then some. Have you had any issues with the powder coat chipping off the chrome parts ?

@Buddyluv

Sorry for hijacking your thread, but I'm sure you could also be interested in Daves mods :-)

Not sure about Dave's powder coat but I had all the trim on my 2010 XF blacked out and my painter wet sanded and used a self etching primer. Then we used piano black gloss. It's been very successful and no chips or even road debris damage to the trim.
I'm actually blacking out the same portion on my xjs tail lights. Using the same etching primer.

Dave, are those s-type fog lights????
