Default XJS V12 Rear Hubs

Hi Guys,

I have been rebuilding the IRS on my Jag. I had to obtain replacement hub carriers as both of my original ones were cracked. I sourced a pair from Simply Performance whom I have been happily dealing with for a few months now, having bought quite a bit from Ben, a great bloke 😊 The Hubs arrived already fitted with the flanges.

So this weekend I tried to install them. Try as I may I cannot get them to engage with the spline shaft, I carefully filed the shoulders along with the valleys of the splines. I offered up my old hubs (without the Carrier attached) and they go on easily onto the shafts. The new ones I will not even start to go into the flange. I have greased, filed, cleaned & even got a Ex Jaguar mechanic and mechanical engineer to look on Sunday morning, nope. I sent Ben a video showing the dilemma, I showed the installation of the old ones and the the new ones refusing to engage. I tried again today (3 hours) following Ben's advice which included filing again just to make sure there were no burrs. But they simply will not go on, very frustrating.

What am I doing wrong?

Help!!

Roger

Assuming that the hubs from SP were used, the factory applied a Loctite substance to the splines; perhaps some of that remains. Acetone and an old toothbrush may soften it. Having worked on the same area many times, I know that it can be frustrating to get them to engage. I find that if you rotate the axle so that the u joint trunnion is exactly horizontal it makes it easier. Another suggestion would be to remove the lower trunnion shaft so the hub isn’t at an angle.
Another thought is to loosen the worm clamp and slide the u joint shield inward on the axle, might be binding on the carrier.

One of mine was cracked, i had it welded(actually it was the guy rebuilding my IRS that had it welded).

Should have just bought a used one, would have been way cheaper.

i contemplated having the originals scanned and machined out of aluminum.

The factory uses lots and lots of loctite on those splines, definitely has to be removed :/

I had the same issue when I rebuilt my hub. The angle was what seemingly was making it more difficult. Eventually I was frustrated enough I decided to us a dead blow hammer with light taps. That may be bad advice, but it's what I had to do and it worked almost immediately after hours of trying to push it on. I think I also put something under neat the hub to so I could visually line it up with the splines, so when I did tap it on it was lined up as best I could.

Thank you all for your advice. I have cleaned the splines of any residue along with the flanges. Still to no effect. I have tried tapping them in, but I am wary of bashing too hard, as I don't want to cracked the carriers. I already have two cracked ones in the shed. Ben from SP, is sending me replacement Yokes to see if they fit. If they do it means I have to strip down the IRS again to install them ~ sigh. In the meantime I am cleaning up and prepping the old hubs, which fit perfectly, with a view to removing the SP hubs from the carriers and putting my old ones in.
I must say, after many, many hours of trying I am at the stage where it would be easier to re-install the old ones and move on to the brakes.
