Default xjs v12 starter removal

My 87 XJS has an intermittent no-crank condition (dead spot in the starter - a few taps with a hammer and it fires right up) I am planning on removing the starter and having it rebuilt.

I was hoping someone could let me know how tough of a job this is as I heard it's a pita. Does the exhaust need to be unbolted? Are the starter bolts hard to get at?

Also, are parts for this starter going to be fairly common or will I be waiting for weeks and paying through the nose?

Thanks in advance.

PITA, yes.

RH side exhaust pipe needs to be dropped down, some heat shields over the steering rack need to come of....can't remember what else. I'd allow 4-6 hours for the job

You'll need a 7/16 12-point socket and some long extensions for the upper starter bolt.

Replacement starters (original style or smaller gear reduction style) are not hard to get.

Not sure about parts availability if you wanna repair your existing starter.

Cheers

Thanks, Doug. I had a quick look at it today and yes, it looks like a big pita.

After a quick inspection it looks to me like the bottom bolt may be missing. I hope the head is not broken off.

I am going to try and get it off over the next couple days. I will report back on my success (or lack thereof).

Well, after spending most of the day on it yesterday, yes, it's a huge pita. The exhaust gave me the most trouble, but managed to get it off without breaking any studs.

Thanks, Doug. You were bang on with the 12 point 7/16" socket on the top starter bolt. I own one 12 point socket and it is a 7/16". lol.

After some disassembly and inspection, 1000 grit on the commutator and some lubing. Put it back together and it works everytime. So I decided to re-install it. It works perfectly.

I am sure some will say I should have replaced the starter, but at $500 plus for a new starter I couldn't justify it as my labor is free and this one still works.

It looks like you got it fixed. On the same subject, I just replaced the starter on my 87 XJ12 with a new gear reduction style. I like this new starter. It draws less power and spins the engine faster. Its about a third the size and weight of the OEM.

Did you order that starter from the Driven Man John?

They are great and much easier to install especially in a RHD car. I would recommend this upgrade to anyone doing a starter repair.
