My car should be here in 5 days or so (it's being shipped from MN). CAN NOT WAIT. Any issue with window tinting the XKs? I'm trying to decide between 35 or 20 darkness. Wonderful problem to have.

 

I always tint my cars, and had the XKR tinted earlier this week. The back windows are hard to tint, because the edge is embedded in the rubber, so the choice is either to bury the tint up into the rubber (which is hard to do and can take some later repair work) or trim it around so that you have a clear glass border (which is easier but doesnt look so good). The car looks awesome tinted, especially since the interior is charcoal which makes the tint darker. I got darkest legal, but I live on the Gold Coast so you need it.

 

I had my 07 tinted to the darkest I could get back in 2010 in FL, where it comes in handy. I got stopped by a FL trooper three weeks ago for the first time. She was at the exit on the turnpike as I got off, pulled me over and used an electronic gauge to measure the darkness. She gave me a warning instead of a ticket, probably thanks to my Purple Heart plates. I have seen her twice since then at the same exit but since I saw her first, I rolled down the windows and drove past with no problems.

 

I just tinted my car with LLumar Formula 1 tint. Whatever is legal in MA. Came out really nice and cuts down the heat in the car and happy with it. Even if I could've gone darker I would not have. I actually like the look of it with no tint, but the car is outside all the time, so the UV protection was important.

Go with 100% ceramic based tints. I think the whole job was under $300

 

I had mine tinted at 30% and no issues at all as I think the legal limit in FL is 28% but there are many cars that are much darker. Not sure of the brand of tint since the dealer had it done at my request before I picked up the car.

 

Thanks, everyone! I found that the legal limit in Texas is 25%, which is plenty dark for me. I may also do the front windshield in UV Clear, to try to help prevent the leather on the dash from aging and pulling away - a problem I already need to fix.

Mosesbotol, I'll definitely look into the ceramic tint.

BruceTheQuail, the back window was my concern. I definitely want the tint to go all the way to the rubber. My previous car had an issue with that. Perhaps I'll go to the dealership and see what they recommend - they'll, of course, be more expensive, but as long as it looks perfect.

 

Do you have a purple heart? I swear my Army Ranger Licence plate frame gets me out of more tickets...

 

I tinted my 07 XKR windshield, I don't know if I would do it again.

It may have just been the brand of tinting the shop used but when I was driving into the sun, I could always see some imperfections in the tinting. Looked like it needed to be cleaned but it WAS clean.

Also, you have to really watch when getting your inspection sticker that they don't go crazy with the scraper.. ask me how I know

Today is my last day for my XKR, I'm getting an XFR.. I won't tint the windshield.

 

Look for dealers of Hüper Optik or LLumar (this is one I used). Check out Yelp and the like to select tint shop.

When I had mine done, a computer cuts the shape and the computer had the wrong dimensions for the small window. They had to hand cut it; no big deal for them. The rear window looks darker than the percent it is tinted with. You may not have to go as dark for a dark look.

 

Yeah, purple heart from '68. I think the plate is kinda like a get-out-of-jail-free card.

 

Double check the law before you do the front. In Florida, that's illegal.

Chazaroo, I just did check the Texas DMV site. Driver and passenger front is limit 25%, rear windows and back are no limit.

 

Folding sun screen. My car has hardly seen a garage and dash looks great. The folding screen fits perfect straddled in the back seat. Takes 4-8 seconds to put on or take off.

 

For you folks tinting the back glass on the coupe...
The side windows pop out with ease... A 10mm wrench, and slide them forward. Easy to tint that way!

The back side windows remove. Its very easy. You'll be 150% to 200% happier with the tint all the way to the edge. My installer redid mine for free when I took the windows out and handed them to him. Just one little bolt under the weather stripping.

Good tint shop does not need the windows out and should offer lifetime warranty.

...here in New Mexico a 50% tint with lifetime warranty is $25.00 per window.

I have had several cars done already. Looks great. Highly professional work.

 

My XKR has the rear quarter glass tinted - It was already done when I bought the car & looks great. We don't really need all the windows tinting to keep the interior cool here in Lancashire!

 

I sure like the look of the 20" Sentas on your car.

I think my 2009 XKR convertible would look so much better with the Sentas.
