Default 0-60 mph times compare to the old days

I didn't consider it but after looking at various shows of "what's my car worth" on Velocity TV it amazes me as to how fast the later model XKR 's are. I look at all of the 60'and 70's mussel cars and a lot of exotics and I see times of 5-8 seconds 0-60.A lot of these cars that I thought were fast in my youth aren't as fast as the Jag. Now granted there are some of the newer cars that are faster but I would have never put Jaguar into that class. Just an observation.

0-60 is in a large way limited by tires. The same for skid pad numbers. If they are quoting magazine article's from back in the day, it will be with numbers generated with older tires.

Now that said, the 5.0 XKR is quite the beast for a stock car.

Crazy to think that a modern bread & butter Ferrari is faster around an F1 track than older F1 cars like Jackie Stewarts Tyrell and the like...

The most impressive achievement is the fact that these forced induction low capacity 4cyl rocket ships are super fast these days

When I went to the drags this year I saw a stack of fairly stock cla45 and s3 (obviously increased boost) running 11s and 12s

I'm not sure what times & speeds are for our modern day Jag XKs & XKRs ... but here's an eye-opening comparison of the ultra-bad *** '67 Corvette vs. the '97 NSX - both naturally aspirated.

1967 Corvette 7.0L V-8 (427 cu., 435 hp) Tri-Power, 4 Speed
0-60 mph: 5.4 Seconds
1/4 Mile: 13.4 Seconds @ 104 mph
Top Speed: 151 mph, Redline: 6,000 rpm

1997 NSX 3.2L V-6 (183 cu. 290 hp) FI, 6 Speed
0-60 mph: 4.9 Seconds
1/4 Mile: 12.9 Seconds @ 105 mph
Top Speed: 172 mph, Redline: 7,800 rpm

All info per Car & Driver Magazine

I've seen numbers for the 5.0L SC XKR at 4.5 to 4.9 0-60 times and considering the weight to HP ratio I think they are very good . I realize that there are faster modern cars (but not many) and faster older cars but for a heavy GT these cars move. Just say an article on a orig. Cobra 427-435 that does 0-60 in 4 sec. but it only weighs around 2,000 lbs. Now in comparison I have a buddy who just bought a 2017 Camaro 50th Anniv. which claims 0-60 in 4 seconds. Interesting as the evolution came about as HP numbers suffered as we went through the emission times and from carbs to FI to DI . I guess for me it's just fun to see this come about.

To me the most amazing thing is the fuel economy of modern rocket ships compared to the old muscle cars of my youth. Highway at 20-25 mpg is standard today.

Notwithstanding all the praises of newer sporty vehicles,
the old generation were more fun and accessible. Bits
of the vehicle didn't break off if you looked at them
cross eyed. ABS was in the brain somewhere.

Fuel economy? I was shocked when gas hit $0.39/gallon.

Hi
I joined here to ask some questions about my new (well to me lol) S-Type, and the first thread I see is about 0-60 times
Back in "The day" 15 years ago, I used to own a little 2.0L 4 cylinder Ford, that had a Cosworth badge on the back with shall we say a little bit of tuning lol.
That car run a 2.99 0-60, with plenty of 3 second runs to back it up and a best 1/4 mile time of 10.8 and a terminal of 138mph.
In those days it was one of the quicker street legal (my everyday driver with full leather trim and 3500W of stereo gear) 4 Cyl cars.
Except full on company tuned skylines and supras etc none of the imports (evo's scoobys BMw M's etc) got close.
Now days these little 4 cyl imports are unbelievable with ridiculous times and you want to have a look on youtube at some of the top FWD cars these days, where talking 8 second runs :O, maybe not totaly street legal, but if you want to compare modern cars with old cars !!!

Anyway need to get back to asking some questions on my "cat" (am so new to Jag ownership I take it all Jags are refereed to as cats, big cat etc lol)

Steve

When I was young (more than 30 years ago), a VW Golf GTI was the dream car of every young man.

0-100km/h 9,1 sec.

Normal cars were at 15-20sec.

Yep I remember $0.35 cents per gallon. My old man used to buy me 6 gallons of gas per week for my snowmobile (I was 13) I would use it up in 1 day. I was told gas was too expensive to just waste? I also remember saying that once gas hits a dollar a gallon I'm done driving. Those were the days.

Guess I was never young enough to ever think of any VW as a 'dream car'. If I saw one on the road, I'd think hmmm, GTI, 'Good To Ignore'?

+1

Funny the threads about leaving people in the dust, etc. There are many cars, SUV's, sedans, station wagons, trucks, that can hang or beat the regular 5.0L XK. The 5.0L XKR is a different story. Still, there are plenty of stock vehicles on the road that can hang with both.

if you were born in the 80´s in Northern Europa (in South Europa, was the Fiat Panda a dream car) you would have had the VW Golf GTI as your dream car.

Why?

Exotic cars (Jaguar, Aston Martin, Ferrari, Lambo, American Cars a.s.o.) or other German Cars (Porsche, BMW M3 a.s.o.) had been in this time so expensive to buy and yearly in insurance and tax, that you only would had been abe to drive one - with yery rich parents.

Understood. However I was born a few decades before that in the MidWestern US, and VW was known (due to the Beetle) as a noisy (chain rattling) rust bucket (with one redeeming quality, with that rear engine over the drive wheels, it could get around in the snow).
When the Golf arrived, it was like "So where's the rest of the car? They only sent over the front half".

I've always gone by the sixty-foot times. Anything under 1.5 is pretty good. I haven't tried the XKR yet, but my old Drag car does it easily.
