First I've heard of it. But, being an independent, we very few cars until the warranty dies.

common problem it's a exhaust vibration.. take it to a dealer .. and ask them to call there technical hotline.. and they will give the tech 2 part numbers.. they know how to fix this problem for over a year now .. jag will send them two exhaust brackets.. that bolt around the cats.. and then bolt to the transmission.. the noise goes away after these are installed.. have fixed about 8 or 9 already..

If your car is not under warranty, they can fix it with the exhaust brackets as described, but you will pay a hefty sum. I decided to just enjoy it ... like the car is breathing or purring, lol

I had the same issue with my '08 XK. The dealer did install the exhaust brackets which moved the droning/vibration up to about the 1800-2000 range, right where I tend to cruise on the freeways. Not quite as obvious as the previous noise but, still bothersome. The interesting part is that now the noise comes in only after a good 45+ minutes of freeway driving when, apparently, the exhaust gets heat soaked. Thus, I was not able to reproduce it for the dealer's mechanic during our short test drive. Now, I just live with it by turning up the radio. I know, inexcusable for any car, save a Jag.

Dave,
I'm a new owner of a 2007 XK with only 8k miles on it and have noticed this ' vibration '. To be honest it's more of a drone with mine and until I saw this thread was convinced it was tire noise from the 4 year old Dunlops. Did you get it fixed at a Jag dealership or do it yourself?

If this was the subject of a technical bullet-in which Jag new about then I'm going to try and get the dealership to cover it as I've only had the car for 2 weeks. If that fails and you can get the parts I'll have my local mechanic do it. I assume JTB00088 is the part number?

If anyone else wants to chime in with advice then I'd welcome it.

Thanks

Steve

OK just realised that JTB must mean Jaguar Technical Bulletin versus being a part #. I found this from a UK site. re: the part numbers.

Add-on repairs as per ref bulletin JTB 00088 31.91.07 - 0.90 N22 42 XR8 55909
arts: Bracket Mount JC2P 13477 & JC2P 13478 , HEX BOLT JJFP10606B , NUT FLANGE JFN 106041

Greetings again all,

Looking into this, as I have the resonance problem on my '07 I just bought.
As I understand it, the fix is a bracket attached to the transmission, and then strapped to the cats. Sounds simple enough if i have understood it correctly.

I would like to fabricate the repair rather than pay $600+ for it, but would feel more comfortable if someone could post a snap shot of the actual assembly as it is mounted on your car, just so I know I'm on the right track.

I (and my pocketbook) would both thank you.

keep it shiny side up!
Vince

Sorry, can not make pictures of the brackets as I took mine off and tossed them in the garbage. In my case the brackets moved the drone right into the 2000 RPM range, where most of my driving happens to be.

The brackets, particularly the driver's side, were a complex shape and fit. I actually had to cut the one bracket into 3 parts to remove it, without having to disconnect a number of pipes, exhaust, etc.

The drone without the brackets is not as audible as the low RPM drone but, still very bothersome. Interestingly, it only begins to be heard after a good 30 minutes of freeway cruise, getting louder as the time goes-on. Since nearly all my driving is freeway, 150 miles each way, I get to listen to the drone more than enough and curse Jaguar for the crappy muffler setup.

My suspicion is that the muffler's spring loaded valve is to blame. It heat soaks after a half an hour and probably softens enough to partially open the exhaust bypass valve, which likely causes the drone.

My '08 is still under factory warranty, yet, I can not get it fixed because I can not produce the drone when a dealer rep is riding with me. Simply because the car needs to be driven at least 30 minutes to heat soak.

I am on the verge of ordering a Mina Gallery exhaust setup, even though I do not want a louder exhaust (the Mina is) and not convinced at all that I would not actually loose performance. The Mina muffler is not a bypass valve controlled muffler so, it is likely to provide more back pressure than the stock one with the bypass valve open.

I took the car to a muffler shop Friday to see if I could have a set of resonators installed right after the cat converters. They could not find anything in their books to fit.

I got one more hot rod trick to try before giving in and ordering the Mina. I will try to clamp some weights to the exhaust pipes right after the cat converter to see if I can get rid of the drone frequencies. As of now the car drones between 69 - 80 MPH, exactly where I do 95 percent of my driving.

My 08 has the same anomaly.

As a long time high performance car guy this is a classic symptom of exhaust resonance. You can either live with it or manually down shift a gear to move the RPM's up a tad to move outside the "drone zone" as us old Corvette guys call it.

Car will drone often around that RPM, but that is something different...

The resonance/droning in this RPM range is entirely an exhaust issue on the early cars; Jaguar solved it by designing a (not inexpensive) pair of brackets to eliminate this problem (part numbers C2P13477 and 13478); with these brackets properly fitted, the resonance disappears completely, and contrary to a comment above, does NOT reappear at any rpm range. How do I know? I had my dealer fit the brackets 2 years ago. No resonance issue since, under any conditions. If your car has this issue, it can be, no...it IS very annoying. Getting it properly fixed transforms the driving experience.
