I searched but came up without anything on this question. The hood / bonnet vent grilles on my XKR fit loose in the hood opening and do not utilize a gasket (lack of gasket appears correct by the OEM parts master). I assume that is maybe by design to allow for differential thermal expansion as the hood gets hot. However, I believe this is the source of some of the annoying rattles from the front of the car at times, keeping in mind that some of the rattles / clunks are from worn suspension bushings (on the list for replacement). Has anyone else experienced this? I am going to apply small pieces of weatherstrip putty at the retaining clips on the underside of the hood to see if that eliminates a rattle. Any thoughts?

There are two versions of the hood vents. The optional https://parts.jaguarlandroverclassic...tml?code=10980 does not use a gasket. ( I know, I have it)
But I do know of what you speak. Frankly I'm surprised they rattle that much... and wonder if a locking tab or two are missing. Either way, that thin weather stripping for windows, with an adhesive on 1 side should work. I would afix the stripping to the vent, not the recess.

Glad I have 2 sets. Prev owner removed and saved the matching celestial black vents and put in chrome.

I will say they do move around freely. I’ve removed both and reattached snugly but they loosen over time.
My issue is that when they move around slightly, they scratch the paint in the recess.

 

I do not want to remove them and install weatherstrip "gasket". My plan is to mold a small stick of weatherstrip putty at each clip from the engine compartment side to act as an anti-rattle spring of sorts while still allowing expansion / contraction movement. Tomorrow if it is not raining, or snowing, lol.

 

I don't experience that issue.

 

My car has the optional hood vents mentioned in post #2 above and I had the rattling noise as well. I was concerned of breaking the vents when removing them, so my solution was to shorten several toothpicks (first colored with a market to roughly match the paint color of the car) and wedge them into the area between the clips and the hood to take the "slop" out of the vents.

 

Many years ago, the ones on my wife’s car were looking really bad from the sun, and I replaced them with carbon fiber ones from the Mina Gallery. Those attached with only double sided tape. It’s been more than 7 years and they are still holding on.
