Default 2008 Jaguar XKR Pricing Help

Hi All,

I am seriously considering a 2008 XKR with the 4.2L with 2,500 miles on it. The owner is asking 38,500 for it. What would be a fair price for this car if everything is as perfect as a 2500 mile XK should be.

https://www.cars.com/vehicledetail/d...5895/overview/

Thanks,

Mike

You can check comparable values on Edmunds, KBB, CaCars and other sites. There are a few issues to be aware of with 07-09 XKs and XKRs. The leather on the upper dash tends to "pull" and cause bubbles if the vehicle is left in the sun for long periods of time. The duckbill on the end of the condensate tube (it removes excess moisture from the AC) tends to either clog or get stuck closed causing the water to back up into the fan motor.

The water pump is a weak point and its failure can fry your engine if you don't stop rapidly when the vehicle overheats or you can smell the coolant. If you don't drive the car often you will need to keep it on a battery maintainer such as a Ctek. These cars like a fully charged battery if the battery is weakened you may get a lot of random electronic faults.

Other than the above items, most of which are well documented with work arounds on this forum; XKs are very reliable and lots of fun to own.

Dealers around here use NADA which places it @ around $33k clean retail with 2500 miles. Age effects the value of the car too and cars that are driven too little have their own sets of problems.

MY mantra on buying vehicles with Low/High mileage...
If you actually plan on DRIVING the car, buy one with lower mileage.
If you plan on letting it collect dust in the garage, then higher mileage would make sense.
My reasoning is that in five years, both vehicles will have identical mileage on them. Buy the low, it'll end up medium or more. Buy the higher mileage, it will basically stay the same.
Me, I DRIVE my car. I didn't buy it to sit in the garage so I can open the door once a week and go "OOOHHHH!!!! Pretty!".

To the OP; If you will DRIVE it, go ahead and get it already! Seems a bit on the high side for a 4.2, but that's just me. You could get a 5.0 for about the same price, higher miles of course.

Seems a tad overpriced to me. No adaptive cruise. The Alcon brakes are a small fortune to replace. The aluminum dash is not my taste. I've never heard of the 4.2 having water pump issues.

I've had no major issues with my 07 in 3 years. My dash is fine but I moisten it all the time. That one probably needs all new fluids including the trans. Price that stuff out and you'll find it's not cheap. Old tires too.

Yeah, I think it's the 5.0's that had water pump problems (until a new pump version was released).

Yeah, not too much trouble to go on Autotrader and do a nationwide search. I ran one for 2008 only, and here's the closest "comp" I found:

Cars for Sale: Used 2008 Jaguar XK in R Coupe, Marietta GA: 30062 Details - Coupe - Autotrader

Personally, I like the aluminum trim, and I'll tell you that while I'm not a 20" wheel guy, people like it on my car. It's a solid upgrade.
My experience is that private party sellers tend to start high. And I agree with Sean W about cars being driven too seldom. On the other hand... those miles are so low that you could buy it, drive it for a year, see how it treats you... and you'll STILL have the lowest-miles 2008 out there if you decide to sell. What I'd do: drive it, make a lowish offer, and wait.

Dealer states that this 2008 XKR has Adaptive Cruise. It does not, as evidenced by the photo of the steering wheel. There is only 1 rotary switch on the right side of the steering wheel. Cars with Adaptive Cruise have 2.

I am similar to Cee Jay on a past Jag. I do not drive much, so I bought one with higher miles and in two years was an average mile, three years a low mileage car... Worked out fine. I still don't drive much (4K a year).

In the end for me, it's the condition of the car, not the mileage I look at first. I put too much time into caring for cars, and I become fickle if the car is not in good condition to start with.

I would be nervous with an XK with that low mileage. Unexpected wear and deterioration happens to idle cars. Leaks, etc... Just consider that in your total cost of ownership .

+50 on Adaptive Cruise. If you're careful and watch out for yourself, your car will stop itself. It's not MADE to do that, and once it stops it WILL creep forward so you still have to drive.

It doesn't on my 07 XKR. Once the car has slowed to 18 mph the Adaptive Cruise disables itself, a loud bing is sounded and the message Driver Intervene appears in the dash display.

On the XE, Adaptive works down to a standstill. Much better version than what was on the XK; evolution....

Take a look at my post regarding an XKR coupe on ebay, "Looking for a 5.0L XKR coupe?" You might find this car to be of interest.
