2008 XK - help upgrading Navigation/iPhone system
OK, I had a chance to take a drive yesterday. My wife said she can barely understand me over the phone. She hears the turn signal better than me.
I pulled the XK wiring diagram and the mic in the A-pillar connects to the IAM. As this connection plugs into the new unit, it should be working.
Another thing I attempted was google voice. When I press it, voice appears on screen but is unresponsive. So I'm a little lost as that function should work with or without a phone connected since it a standalone Android device.
peterV8 - I know you direct wired your speakers. Should have no bearing on others hearing you on a call but both Loudhogrider and I appear to have the same issue.

However when I start Google Assistand, it actually understands what I am saying. Not always, but that might have something to do with my accent. Also there is a voice assistant app on the device which also works.
Only the bluetooth phone has problems apparently.
I will ask my seller if there is an update to the OS, becasue there are other issues as well, however he didn't really wanted to hear my bug reports.
I'm getting more interested in installing this product.
But one of the items coming up is the quality of the supplier, since there seems to be several of varying quality.
Perhaps, if your supplier gave decent support when you bought it, could you offer their name and source so others could benefit?
Also, has anyone identified the actual manufacturer of this unit?
Thanks!

On Alibaba, just like on Aliexpress, every seller claims to be the manufacturer.
I think, you will never really know.
It seems that these devices use the same OS or partially the same OS as the Joying devices.
Joying is the biggest company for android head units and I think, they might really be the manufacturer of their devices.
I can imagine that these devices are coming from Joying, however Joying doesn't seem to sell them, which is strange.

Next I connected my iPhone through CarPlay and called he on her phone. She couldn't hear me unless I selected phone speaker on the phone itself.
Then I disconnected CarPlay and just connected the iPhone through bluetooth. She could hear me but said it sounded like I was far away and couldn't make out much of what I was saying.
So then I selected the iPhone speaker and she could hear me fine again.
Any ideas? I can't seem to find a mic volume on the iPhone, just an on/off switch.
Now that you mention it, I remember that I also had the same issue with the original Jaguar head unit when I bought it. I had to adjust the volume with the phone's volume control during the Bluetooth connection. That regulated the volume only for the Bluetooth connection, not for the volume of the phone in general.
Maybe we simply have to use the volume buttons on the phone during the Bluetooth call to make it louder. I will check that tomorrow as well.
That's interesting. I need to try this with an Android phone.

I regret I have not used my XK much in the last couple years, so I don’t recall phone operation. But my Lexus, on the screen while I’m on a call, has 2 sliders, one for speaker volume, and another for microphone level. (They might be labeled ‘Receive’ and ‘Transmit’.)

I think that only adjusts what ‘you’ hear, your speaker volume, not your microphone, what ‘they’ hear.

I'm actively monitoring, hoping for a resolution to this issue that DOESN'T involve me switching to an Android phone. No disrespect to them, but most of the tech in my house is Apple-centric.
so you are having the same problem with phone calls? All the functions work except no one can here me unless I hit speaker on the iPhone. The problem is all over google with no real solutions. I'm with you. I don't like Android Auto myself. My entire family is on Apple so Syncing with MacBook and texting is integrated well.

This has something to do with iOS and not the head unit imo. I reset my phone, tried again. New results:
phone speaker clear as day - no change
connected though Bluetooth - it sounds like I'm off in the distance now but people can hear me
connected through CarPlay - no one can hear a sound.
I can hear fine on all three connection types.
With respect to @Sean W's hypothesis that's its an IOS issue - it's possible. I've read some of the release notes on previous iterations of updates and patches, and from time to time the good folks at Apple create issues with Bluetooth in their software.
I haven't driven the Jag much since I put the screen in last year - winter in the Midwest and whatnot - but I'm sure I'll have it out more in the weeks ahead to see where we're at from a hands-free connection experience.
Sean - in your "speaker phone" mode, are you just using the native iPhone functions without any pairing to the head unit? I'd assume that approach would always be operational, though sub-optimal particularly with the top down. I have a vent-mounted phone holder in the Jag, but I really don't ever use the native iPhone speaker mode. If it's playing through the speakers where I can turn up the volume to hear the other party, then I can live with that.
I'll play with the options when I spark it up here in the next week or so. Spring is coming!
Kurt, yes when I have the iPhone connected via BT, CarPlay the phone gives me options to select which speaker and the only one that works is the phone speaker. I've been reading about this on the Google and it's an Apple problem. It was supposed to be fixed with iOS 13 but I'm currently on iOS14.4.1. I'm going to try calling Apple Support but I don't expect to get anywhere as I don't have Apple Care.
Initially when I first launched CarPlay, everything worked. Then later, only BT or car worked and when on BT my wife said I sounded far away. Now no one can hear me. This was happening over the winter and from my garage only but I've made several iOS (mostly security) updates and with each.....
The CarPlay installed in the Car is just a receiver. It never requires an update. The updates and functions all come from the phone.

IIRC, I commented early ITT about the function of the little black round speaker that came with the screen. I think we collectively decided it was the audio for the "touch tones" generated by the screen, but I've always wondered if it wasn't intended to be a duplex speaker in support of that function as well as audio input (in lieu of the pillar mounted microphone on our vehicles).
And I realize as I type this that the aforementioned notion is just dumb, but I remember taking a call from a buddy of mine during one of my first outings post-screen install, and he said he could hear the motor noises better than he could hear me. The little black round speaker was mounted behind the screen on a metal crossbar underneath the dash at the time, and his comment made me go, "hmmmm..." I've since moved it up behind the center dash AC vents, so we'll see what kind of experience I'm in store for later this week when the weather breaks. I'm anxious to get behind the wheel of the Jag again. VROOOM!
Thanks arenaej, no difference connecting either way. All other functions as designed.
