2010 XK Convertiable Top Plastic Slide Cover will not retract
My 2010 XK Convertible has an Issue with the small plastic piece not retracting when the top is down. See photos below:
I noticed this issue with the top down when I got the car.
Left Side - Should be like this with the top down Right Side - Won't close with the top down
I've looked into trying to remove the plastic pieces/interior around it, but no luck. I even tried opening the top half way then stopping it, then trying to look for a spring missing or possible the plastic piece has come off it's tracks.
Has anyone out there had this same issue? It's like the spring has broken or the plastic piece itself has broken somehow.
Too many possibilities to go over at the moment. Is it in the track? Is one of the slide pins broken?
If not in track try tweaking back into place (gently it is plastic = bendable and breakable). If it looks okay, spritz with silicone spray. Last resort, search this site for repairs to this panel and the strange closing mechanism. There are many threads with images etc, good luck.

From that picture it looks like it is moving normally but just getting stuck near the end? I was having an issue with this after I changed my interior, and it was binding in the tracks. It's pulled into place by an elastic cord that attaches to a lug on the convertible top frame. I pulled that cord off and lubricated the entirety of the tracks, which helped a bit (it would get about 95% of the way when putting the top down and the boot closing would bounce it into place completely; then it would bind with the roof closing but the frame bumping it would knock it back below immediately); but what ultimately fixed it was pulling the rear seat, loosening the upper rear bolt of the interior quarter panel that is behind the rear seat and sliding it over about a quarter of an inch towards the center of the car. Haven't had issues since.
On occasion, it is possible to repair/correct the operation of the convertible door cover without removing the rear quarter trim panel.
The door rides on a plastic track that is fixed to the quarter trim panel.
Door closing force is provided by a white plastic, tubular spring damper via nylon para-cord.
However, the best way to understand how the assembly works is to remove the quarter trim panel.
With the quarter trim panel removed, you can properly diagnose the malfunction that caused the problem and easily lubricate.
Possible malfunctions:
1. Defective tubular spring damper and/or nylon cord.
2. Broken track (attached to quarter trim).
3. Defective door cover legs/feet.
4. Incorrect door to quarter trim alignment/clearance.
5. Improper lubricant (Do not use petroleum based).
When attempting to put a door back on track with the quarter trim in place, it is useful to remove screws in the vicinity to allow the track to flex open.
The track is attached to the quarter trim with hot glue, not available as a separate replacement.
Review the service manual instructions for quarter trim panel removal and alignment.
Silicone grease or spray for plastic. Try plumbing supply for "O" ring use.
Note: The left cover photo, clearance, quarter trim to tonneau cover clearance appears normal.
The right cover photo, clearance, quarter trim to tonneau cover clearance appears too tight.
Inadequate quarter trim to tonneau clearance allows contact between door and tonneau.
When the tonneau opens, it can catch the door cover, breaking the door, track or both.
