Default Convertible top on 2007 XK

I have an 07 XK and I'm actual returning it to pristine condition. Question for forum is that when I let my top down, I have two holes in the body( one on each side (located next to each of the rear quarter windows) where top retracts that exposes square shaped hole. It should be some kind of cover there and it looks like a simple flap but I cannot find it in any drawing to begin searching for the part. Any help on sourcing the part and how to install would be greatly appreciated.

The covers are pulled out to close the hinge hole against a spring by a slim "thread" (OK, string) attached to the converible top hinge. You may be "missing" the covers because they are retracted due to failure of the strings. This can happen if the two "tracks" that the covers slide between, become separated (they are positioned on separate trim parts and only accurately spaced, to the 89mm gap, by a friction grip screw). If the slides hang up, the opening top will break the string - or more likley pull the end of the string loop out of the crimp.

This happened to me - because I muffed refitting the trim parts, failing to set the 89mm gap correctly, when I fitted WhiteXKR's excellent remote top device (You need one of these, by the way!). I found I could not recrimp the loop, and the cost of the replacement assembly is fierce. Note that the part numbers differ depennding on the colour of the trim.

In the end I "whipped" fine thread around the end of string to remake the loop and applied super glue to the whipped joint. This turned out to be very strong, and is still working well 18 months later.

Do check the "tracks" where the cover "pegs" run, as the forward pair of pegs run in a lowerand track than the aft pair. After I got these reset, I lubricated each with some Pledge wax furnture polish.
A good cheap fix that seems to endure.

Good luck
MM
