3D Printed J-Gate Chrome Surround
My two cents.....
It just so happens, I used that HVAC shiny very sticky tape last night (few hours ago) in adding insulation to a feral cat's den...another story. However, if one were very patient and good at detail work using micro-tools, I think it could be used for the surround.
It just so happens again, I have a friend who's a 3D fanatic and has made a couple of widgets, for me. Most recently, a foam canon adapter for my high pressure washer. It's made from a carbon fiber based printing material. Hard and tough as a rock. I'm not sure the process will replicate what were seeking in this discussion.
I'm still beating up how to replicate a "fix" for a tiny black chip that I have in the center of the shifter gate. I've discussed this issue here in the past.
I just saw Ranchero's reply. I too, thought about a vinyl cover, but, it always gets back to the issue of the lighted shifter detail in the gate.

I think you'd need to do the decal in layers. A translucent white and red decal first and then a 'position' cutout decal over that. Finish it with a satin gloss clear for protection. Hard part would be putting the first lit layers down so the seam wasn't visible through the top layers.

I'd like to have a shifter gate to attempt a prototype on both ideas.
A quick follow-up on my post from yesterday, which prompted me to send a follow-up note to Malcolm at "solar_signa" on eBay regarding the status of his initiative. I received the following response, along with a photo of his prototype
"Hi Kurt,
We've managed to obtain a first prototype but we still need to find the right double sided tape to hold the plate to the original piece. We also need to fabricate the mold that will shape the plate.
Here is a preview. Feel free to comment.
Thank you
Malcolm"

I went to their website and had a big laugh when I saw the photo of that Jag outdoors in the snow. With a name like Pacific, I expected the opposite. And then I saw that they're in Chicago and had another laugh. The murder capital is exactly the opposite of a peaceful place.
That made me concered that if I bought anything from them I wouldn't get what I expected.
Caveat Emptor!

My last experience with them was good. I ordered a center vent assy., it was in perfect shape and reasonably priced. Perhaps lucky?
While the J gate, I mentioned appears to be "chewed on" , there those in much worse shape. The area that's a little "chewed" is the traction ctl button. Must have been used a lot? LOL!

PM sent.
Bought several things from them, and you need to study the pictures carefully, as most stuff is dirty, scratched, or damaged, or as Ranchero said ‘chewed on’.
We must travel in the same circles so you might know or not, Tesa is brand we have been dealing with due to lack of gestapo like licensing terms.
Of course, it's a joke but your passengers won't know and you can have some fun with them. Vendor is in Australia. It's an easily removable sticker.
