4.2 or 5.0
In a little under two years we plan on getting an XKR or XK. If we go XKR it will probably be the 4.2 but in 2 years we should be seeing the 5.0 coming off lease and thus getting some pretty good deals there.
Has anyone managed a side by side comparison of the 4.2 XKR and 5.0 NA?
Is there much improvement over the rest of the car?

Assuming the prices for a 2009 XKR and a 2010 XK are about the same I would go for the 2010 XK. They are about the same performance wise, but the 2010 XK has the new differential design as well as some other detail improvements. My guess is that the 5.0 NA engine will be more reliable as well. Since you will be buying used the 2010 will have another year of warranty coverage.
Good luck with your choice though,

We have considered buying new, which is something I didn't want to do as I change cars so frequently. But my last two cars I've had so much longer than usual, i.e. 2005 S-type and 2007 Ford Sport Trac.
I do wonder, the XK is such a great car, I'm pretty sure we'll be keeping it along time. Should we just go new?

chris,
In your case I would recommend buying used. I did a search for 2009 XKRs within 500 miles of my location and found the price ranges from $63K to about $80K. This would make them cheaper than a new 2010 XK. Generally, Jaguars take a pretty big depreciation hit for the first two or so years so getting a late model used one is fairly cost effective. Considering the 2009 XKRs listed for $90-100K depending on equipment you would be looking at saving about $30K by buying used. If you go this route I would recommend getting one that has the Certified Edition extended warranty. This covers your car for 6 years or 100K miles from the original purchase date.
Good luck with your choice.
