Default 4.2 Liter oil change protocol?

can anyone please detail the proper process for an xk 4.2 oil change?

oil brand/weight?
quantity?
oil filter brand?
jacking points for lifting the car?
any special tools required?
any shroud removal requirements?

thank you.

Peter, before this gets really ugly, and most likely it will, refer to your owners manual for the correct viscosity (weight) for your climate. Choose whatever brand and type makes you happiest making sure it meets the Jag spec, also listed in the manual.

Let the battles begin!

I understand his question, because it may be like changing breaks on a jag. there is a protocol and if done wrong you can mess stuff up and cost your self even more, Peter I'm under the old school thinking that the only dumb question is the one not asked..... and I believe jag ask for Castrol oil it should say on your filler cap. I my self use motor craft 5 - 30 Synthetic Blend but that's just my choice I'm sure others smarter than me might disagree

as my car has less than 10k miles on her and has never been lifted w/ a floor jack, i am most concerned that i have the jacking points correct as i would hate to be the guy that damaged this lovely lady. that said i hope to get responses regarding my foregoing list.

best,

I bought a pair of race ramps that work great. Its a weekend car for me so I change the oil every six months.

Jag has a marketing agreement with Castrol, that's about it. There's no requirement to use them.

Nothing wrong with the oil you're using if 5W30 suits your climate. It's one of hundreds on the market that are suitable.

Check out your owners manual, shows the Jack points, recommended oils, intervals, etc. Brand of filter or oil are purely personal preference

The first few posts discuss the jacking points.

I wouldn't do the Rhino ramps in my personal opinion, they are made of plastic. I have the race ramps and I trust being under them. They are worth the extra money.

I use them for my XJ. The are well constructed. I generally don't recommend those items which I haven't owned or used.

Not sure they'd work for the XK. I've got a set of Rhino's, but I've had them a long time, so they may be taller, not sure. But anyway, I can't drive onto them for front-end work, not enough clearance. I can back up onto them to do work under the rear of the car (as when I changed out the rear box muffler).

Nothing special about changing the oil on an XK. You will have to remove the plastic skid plate underneath, but it's just four screws or so. I mail-ordered genuine jaguar filters, not much more expensive than buying better quality filters locally. I used Castrol 0w30 full synth Euro spec oil (my first oil change on the XK).

I have a set of the regular Rhino Ramps, they are too high to put under the car for the rear wheels. I just use a couple 2x10's under the tires to lift it 2 inches off the ground. If you want to lift it with a jack, go onto Amazon and get one of the slotted hockey pucks for your jack. They slot them so they fit perfectly around the pinch weld jacking point. No scratches or bending of the pinch weld when you jack it up.

I own a pristine 2009 Jaguar XKR Portfolio Edition Convertible.... 4.2L Supercharged engine.
Showroom condition, 17,800 miles and probably the finest 2009 Jaguar XKR Portfolio Edition in the USA.

There is absolutely nothing special about changing oil on the car.

As the member above stated, you simply remove the plastic skid plate undercarriage protector. Most modern cars have the plastic shroud under the engine. The Jaguar 4.2 XK/XKR is nothing special here.

The oil filter is normal canister type filter and I use the K&N brand for my 4.2L engine. Model K&N HP-1014 Performance Filter. From Amazon $13.50 Google the model.

I buy my Castrol Oil at Walmart in a 5-Quart container and 2 extra quarts.
5 Qt Container is: $22.88 and each quart thereafter is $8.00

All you need is the filter and oil, nothing more, nothing less. The K&N HP1014 oil filter is a perfect match for the Jaguar as well as the Castrol Oil.

I have been taking all of my cars to a local oil change shop that does oil changes only with my own filter and oil and they make the change for $26.00.

It takes 15-20 minutes for them to make the change. They check the tires, all fluids, vacuum the car and wash all the windows. There is a crew of 3 total working the XKR.

I take all my cars to the same national brand name oil change shop, which includes my 2014 Porsche 981, 2014 Ford F150, 2009 Jaguar XKR and once my free oil changes are used up at the GM dealership on my 2015 Corvette C7, I will do the same on it.

There is a myth that an oil change on a Jaguar pre-2010 model with a 4.2L engine is something special. Paying a Jaguar dealer $150+ for an oil change is crazy in my mind. It is not necessary to have a Jaguar dealer do this. You can do the work yourself with a set of ramps. But why DIY for saving $26.00?

I have never had a single problem doing oil changes this way for the past 10 years+ at this local shop, and I know all the oil change guys who work at the shop and on my cars

Anybody who wants to challenge my experience is talking out of their butthole. Plain and simple.

There is nothing special about an oil change on a 4.2L Jaguar XK or XKR.

I have the oil changed annually because my XKR sees less than 3000 miles driven annually.
