Default Aftermarket Satnav

Hi

I've recently submitted a post on the forum regarding a problem with the Jag Sat Nav not receiving a GPS signal, and it looks like I'm going to be getting myself a Garmin sat nav in the near future to replace the faulty Jag one.

Whilst undertaking a bit of research into which nav to buy and other Jag drivers problems with their navs, it seems that there are a fair few 2013 XF owners who report their Tomtom or Garmin Navs losing signal due to their type of tinted or heated windscreens creating a kind of anti GPS shield.

Do any of you fellow XK owners use Tomtoms or Garmins, and if so, have you experienced any signal problems with them?

By the way, I'll be fitting mine to a 2011 XKR and am looking at the Garmin Nuvi 3598... now I've got the XKR the speed camera functionality seems like a necessity rather than luxury

Thanks for your help.

I have a TomTom 940, and the 75 has a heated screen - no problems with satellite reception. The speed camera database is pretty good, too - it has a good system for average-speed cameras, showing the average you're achieving.

The tint films that contain metallic elements quite frequently block GPS signals. The newer films now contain ceramic elements specifically to have this alleviated. If your current film IS metallic, you'd have to get it replaced for your GPS to operate correctly.

Tinted films on windscreens are pretty restricted here in the UK (where the OP lives). You can tint the rear side windows and rear screens as much as you like, but the windscreen is limited to 25% and the front side windows to 30%. Since most windscreens already have tinted glass, very few people bother to add whatever little extra that the law allows.

Garmin 100%
I have used quite a few different GPS units over the years and have never had a single problem with any Garmin I've ever used. Always accurate and easy to use. I wouldn't trust a TomTom to lead me to the bathroom in my house. Have had TomToms lead me down so many dead ends and try to take me down the wrong way on one-way streets.
