Avoiding turning XK into a Mustang
XK/R-S back box. There are some differences inside. Course I don't know if they would work on a 4.2 setup.

Wouldn’t deleting the back box basically be doing the same thing Quicksilver does?
I have the Mina back box on my 13 XKR and like it very much. I also had one on my 5.90L NA and it was a major improvement over the stock box.

Since Jaguar’s engine’s a variation of those fitted to Mustangs, it’s no surprise they’ll sound similar, in fact the 5.0 litre JLR version sounds even more like it’s Mustang cousin.
I’ve done a variety of variations of exhaust systems to mine. I’d say the best sound wise was the version where I substituted the resonators for an X-pipe and kept the XKR back box. The next version replaced the Jag cats with 200 cell which increased the output decibels. The fourth version replaced everything, increased diameter to 3-inches, added 2 X-pipes and replaced Jaguar back box with dual magnaflow resonators. Currently on version five (no cats) and working on version six.
For yours I’d try fitting an X-pipe and find a 2007-2009 XKR back box (sadly mine got binned at the welders). From there make other adjustments to suit.

I love the mustang sound! I just personally prefer it on a mustang lol. To each their own!
Speaking of Mustangs I've got a Flowmaster cat back system on my '96. Sounds nice and throaty, nice low rumble. I have Magna flow muffler system on my '06. Sounds great, low rumble. I cannot stand the current exhausts with high notes, popping and cracking sounds. My XJS has stock mufflers and I would not alter them.Still, to each their own.
What tune would you recommend? I was recently advised in another thread that tuning wouldn’t be necessary with a simple x pipe plus muffler delete. I was told if I left the cats alone no tune would be necessary. But it sounds like you have information to the contrary?

Is that the kind of a thing you order online and they do remotely or do you have to take it to a shop. Sorry if that’s a dumb question, I’m new to this. Thanks!
Target air/fuel tuning lets your ECU do most of the work so it can be done
after installing your exhaust system, drive for a few hundred miles and then
read the data from your ECU using a handheld device, send the file to them
and they retune based on your data noting your exhaust parts, they send it back
and you flash your ECU with the new adapted values.
