i agree, but also hovering out over the cliff edge like everyone's favorite coyote, i think. could probably go in there to "browse the inventory," get oneself on their radar, wait out the looming pullback. although who knows, i really thought prices would have already been falling hard by now.

Yeah insurance companies LOVE to total these cars.
You can look on another thread I posted about 1 of the Jags that got the "total" treatment - someone else on the forum BOUGHT the car at an auction a few months later and said it drove fine!
The big thing, I'm told, is the aluminum frame. If it's bent, even a tiny bit on one small section... done. Totaled.
I'm with CJ - buy it back.

Did you file a claim directly with the other driver's insurance company because he admitted that he was 100% at fault? Or did you file with your insurance company? If you filed with your insurance company and they determine it to be a total loss, then they should pay you the agreed value and then subrogate against the other driver's insurance company.

In your Post #10, above, you explained that the other driver's insurance company determined your car to be a total loss. Don't accept that total loss amount unless it is equal or greater than the agreed value under your policy. If they send you a check in a lesser amount, don't deposit it and return it to them marked "VOID".

Good point. I bought my original 2008 XKR in the rare Radiance Red color with 34K miles for a hair over $24K in 2018. This deal is pretty ridiculous, the market is ****ed and I believe a lot of these shopper sites are either way off in valuations or give kickbacks to dealers with bogus assessments.

I filed with my insurance. They will pay if it comes to that and pursue recovery from the other insurance. Only way to go in this case!

beats the hell out of no fault insurance here where I live. My insurance pays, my premiums go up. I'm guessing the insurers get right of recovery behind the scenes. The house always wins.

As we kinda expected, they declared my xkr a total loss. The repair estimate was $11,830. Bummer

The salvage value was $4139 which would be deducted from the agreed value if I decide to keep it. I'm still thinking about that.

Wow, they really lowball the salvage value.
If you have the time and space, you could part it out for a whole lot more, if you chose not to fix it.

That is a bummer… maybe sell your motor to CeeJay’s son for his 2007. That would recoup some of the salvage value and may help the kid out of a tough situation.

I suspect I'll repair it. It's not that big a job.
I just wasn't looking for another project.

today's not the day, but one of these days, i'm going to nab a 4.2L XKR that's been in this exact situation, gut it, and race it. i'm talkin' as much body damage as possible with a pristine drivetrain!

I'm exactly opposite of you, I hate bodywork. I'd take a pristine chassis and interior with a shot engine any day.

Repairs are in progress. The front suspension is done and the front wing mounted. The only challenging part was removing the lower sill cover. The screws behind the door seal were all rusted from water entrapment. One gutted when I tried removing. I had to take a cutoff wheel to the cover and dissect it around the screw.

Next up is repairing a tear in the rear wing lower edge. I picked up some Alumaweld rods today. Wish me luck! My past experience with real aluminum welding wasn't pretty.

Good luck.
My experience with alumirods was so distasteful that I bought a mig welder and gas, the spool was so large that that it last me over ten years of minor alum repairs on autos.

sorry, no...closer to Austin/SA.
I sold the mig serveral years back as I didn't own anything aluminum that might need repair...now I have an x150, but hope I never need to weld on it.
I tried quite hard to master the rods and the best I ever managed was to flow the metal 'like butter' but the resulting weld was so brittle that it cracked. Maybe the newer rods are different.

After 3 months of on and off work, my car is back on the road and better than ever. Lots of off-time let me address a number of suspension and other concerns. It feels good to be back!

Yeah, and I've gotten almost two feet of snow in the past week. Not frigid like other places, but still. The tops of the mountains have gotten 75-120 inches of packed base.
I'll not be going anywhere soon. I have a truck for winter and snow.
