Default Brake pads and disks all round

Shop says I will soon need this done! Waiting for a quote but manager says from memory about $1200, jeez
Are there options for me to consider in terms of pad/disk materials? Aftermarket brands to consider?
(this is a large indie JLR shop)

Dozens of possibilities, several threads in here about it. I use Porterfield pads and can't remember the rotor brand. Total in for the whole shootin' match, around two hundred bucks. Another grand for labor on an hours work seems ridiculous.

Pads like Porterfields or Redstuffs are pretty good from all accounts. Discs don't matter as long as they don't have runout from factory and you don't care about weight. All comes down to your driving style and what you want out of them.

I used MTEC on mine, cross drilled grooved disks, with mintex pads plenty of stopping power, I have used them on every car I have from Jaguars, Audi's including A8 and mercedes:

I like how the disks are machined, you can have a protective coating put on etc

I used Porterfield R4S pads (less dust than OEM, plenty of f stopping power) and R1 Concepts drilled and slotted rotors. Agree, the quote seems high.

Unless you want to do the work, this is what decent shops charge. A Jag franchise will be at about $1400 for the same work. Let's say you put it up on stands, take everything apart and break the sensor, or the caliper is seized, drop a pad and chip it, forget the lube, grab the wrong wrench and make 20 trips back and forth to your tool box, round off a bolt, where's my torque wrench, what's the park brake sequence, these wheels are heavier than I remember.....just pay the money.

Edit: the $1400 is for rears only, ask how I know

What are the members feelings toward ceramic brake pads, as opposed to the semi metallic ones?

Slightly cleaner wheels, not as much stopping power. Maybe noisier also.

Yeah I figured the price was probably about right. How many hours labor should it be according to the book for all four disks and pads?

I have ceramic (prev owner put them on).
Rims are never clean. Went so far as to remove all the wheels, scrub the crap out of them then put a mid grade ceramic coating.
Nope, still filthy after 2-3 drives.
Don't have any noise issues or stopping issues, although I don't race it around.
Worth Noting: They are the giant Alcon brakes for the 08 portfoio.

This entire job takes me about an hour, but I know what I'm doing and have everything I could possibly need to do any job. A grand an hour is WAY worth my time. Plus then I'd have knowledge of any possible concern and know the job is done RIGHT.

Way back in the way back, it was 2 hours per axle, 4 hours for all 4 etc. A competent tech can make decent money doing brakes, a hack will make even more, but won't clean the rotors, lube the backs or slides, definitely will NOT bed the pads properly.

seriously? 15mins per wheel to replace the rotor and pads from wheel on to wheel on? I am very impressed and amazed!

Circumnavigator, I strongly doubt you have ceramic brake pads. Carbon pads, yes.

Lots of options for aftermarket rotors/pads. I went with Cquence rotors and Akebono Euro premium carbon ceramic pads. Very pleased with both. For street driving the carbon ceramic pads stop just as well as OEM pads. They don't really need much heat to bite. A little less brake dust as well.
I went with Cquence as they machine the slotted/drilled rotors themselves (rotors come from Aisa as do most rotors these days). They machine the rotos for the left and right side unlike some you find.

Here's one of my fronts installed:

Had to dig waaay back through notes to figure it out. You are correct.
What I had written down was "Carbon Kevlar pads".

Now wondering if I should swap out for less dust.

Put on the lift, a minute at most?
Air is always on
Remove all four wheels, well under two minutes
Every tool I need is in a chest on wheels, and I'm on a wheelie chair or two
Spray bottles of brake kleen in several locations
Cardboard to keep the floor clean is everywhere

You are probably right though, since my back has gotten worse and my wonderful left hand surgery messed it up worse, it'd probably take me 90 minutes or so to do it all now.
I want to be 45 again!

I bought these Brembo ceramic pads in 2019 and had them installed in October 2024 when I replaced all 4 original rotors. My 2009 XKR Portfolio convertible has the Alcon Performance Brake Package, which was a $5,000 option. I don't know if these pads are still available.

The OEM pads left massive amounts of black brake dust. The Brembo pads leave much less dust and it's tan, not black, so it's much less noticeable. I ceramic coated the Selena wheels so the dust comes off easily with a garden hose.

Poked around. Found these, but noticed your photo has a notch on top. These say it fits but do not.
