Can a radio from an XK work in an XKR?
Need to replace my radio / environmental control unit. I see one for sale on eBay, but it's for an XK and I have an XKR. Does anyone know if they are compatible? Alternatively, has anyone done a complete revamp with an aftermarket head unit?

Any aftermarket head unit is cost prohibitive as the current head unit has some heat/ AC/ seat heater/ Steering wheel heater incorporated into the touch screen. They utilize a combination of MOST and CAN BUS. After market head units, just play music. So an aftermarket head unit will have to be custom built.
The audio head unit, where you load the CD's in, is different between the Base system (no subwoofer) and the Premium system (sub and surround) because the Base head unit has the amp built in and drives the speakers directly, whereas the Premium systems have a separate amp.
So you need to be sure you get the right one there.
There's no difference between XK and XKR so far as audio, just the difference between Base and Premium audio.
But, you may or may not be able to make a straight swap of like-for-like units, it will depend on the spec of the donor car being exactly the same as the one you want to put it in. I mean same country/region, because of the different tuning steps for AM & FM, and if you have factory Sirius Satellite radio in the car.
To do it properly, the Car Configuration File in the audio unit should be updated so it's matching the spec of the car, this can only be done with the dealers diagnostic tool SDD. You could possibly avoid this if the donor was identical spec.
There was also two different version of head unit, a six-disc or a single-disc, but to be honest i've never seen a single disc in an XKR...
Swapping in an aftermarket system is not feasible IMHO, for the reasons already mentioned..
