Default Car beeps as I walk away from it?

Lately, when I park, I hit the lock button and as I'm walking away the horn beeps twice. Anybody know what this means?

Chazaroo,

Ok...I'm glad you asked this. So sometimes mine beeps twice, and sometimes not at all. Sometimes I get the flash of the lights to confirm the lock, other times I get the beeps also. I've tried both key fobs to see if this was the difference. I've also tried both single and dual stage locking, and I can't seem to find a consistent pattern for when it beeps and when it doesn't. I'm stumped on this one. Hopefully another forum member will chime in and provide more information.

How are you locking it? If I push the button on the door handle and the key fob is not close enough the car beeps at me.

Davchr,

Thanks to your tip, I have established that the car will beep at you twice if you press the lock on the door handle if the key fob is not in close proximity. I swear it's also beeped sometimes when the fob is nearby, but I can't get this to happen now. Everything works as it should: I just like to figure these little mysteries out!

I have found that the fob has to be very close. I normally keep the fob in my right pocket. If I lock the car with my right hand it is OK. Lock it with my left hand, which puts the fob about 15" further away, it beeps at me and does not lock.

Single locking & double locking. Press the door button once or press it twice.

Interesting, I get the double beep 'not locked' if the fob is too close when I get out of the car, like it thinks the fob is still in the car.
I need to step away and then step back to press the handle button, or turn sideways so the pocket with the fob is farther from the car, or walk around and press the passenger side, or if it really frustrates me I press the lock button on the remote.

If your Smart Key is obstructed (i.e., in the same pocket as your cellphone), the signal may be blocked and not detected.

Keep a spare CR2032 battery for your Smart Key in your glove box in case you get a SMART KEY NOT FOUND message on your dash. It's easy to replace and needs no programming.

I wondered if the lack of consistency has to do with the battery in the key fob? If it's starting to wear down, the car might be having trouble finding it.

Chazaroo,

I have new batteries in both my keys. The inconsistency I noticed seems to be the distance from the car. The double beeps seem to indicate that the car is not locked, rather than locked.

A bit of trivia, if you hold your key fob touching your head, you can lock or unlock your car from nearly a block away. For whatever reason, it extends the range about 10 fold.

Don't laugh. He speaks the truth. I actually watched a video on it a few years ago put out by a professor. Apparently, the fluid in our head acts as a signal amplifier.

Plus, my wife enjoys decorating the weird new growths I now have jutting from my skull. Personally, I find the wind chimes distracting ...

I've done the Remote-to-the-head thing for years, and it does work. Not really ten times the range, but it is about doubled.

Mystery solved. Turns out the passenger door won't lock unless I manually push the lever to the lock position. the double beep is letting me know the car isn't locked. Of course that begs the question, why isn't the passenger side locking with the FOB? I have no idea.

Does it lock when you push in the driver's side interior handle?

No. After reading your post, I tried that. The passenger side stays unlocked until you manually lock it by pushing the passenger side interior handle. Then the FOB works for everything else and I don't get the double beep.

Do you hear the solenoid inside the passenger door TRY to lock? Sounds like either a dead solenoid or detached linkage of some sort. Maybe detached cable?

Does it unlock off the Fob? If so, the maybe one of the various computer settings is set so as not to lock the passenger door unless done manually. Might require a trip to a dealer or a very well equipped Indie.
