Default Cars & bids: Part iii

Ok, so "09 XKR Portfolio went on the block on July 26 thru August 1. While it was a relatively fun experience be prepared to deal with an increased stress level. I'll explain. After 7 days and numerous bids the final numbers at closing did not reach my reserve and by the way any bids over the course of the first 6 days are virtually meaningless. After the auction closed C&B notified me that the high bidder would be contacted to see if an agreeable price could be reached. Short version of this was he countered, I countered, and he agreed....or so it appeared.

After 24 hours C&B notified me that the bidder would not be purchasing ( now, the shipping costs were too high....he didn't figure this PRIOR to bidding?!). But wait...after another 24 hours the bidder now appeared to be willing to continue with the purchase according to my C&B rep. But no, after 12 hours the bidder evaporated having ceased contact with C&B. At this point after consoling my C&B rep ( who really did do a good job of trying to hold this mess together) I had a couple of stiff bourbons and moved on with life.

Now this all took place about last Thursday ( 3 full days after the auction closed). Today, Monday, guess who sends me an email? My faithful C&B rep says that the bidder has been trying to contact them since Friday evening and again today asking if my XKR is still available. See, there is indeed a God!! I responded by apologizing for the delay in my response saying "It took me quite some time to stop laughing!" And I then explained that they should probably inform the bidder that the Jag would not EVER be available to him at any price!! And then I may have mentioned something about a lack of respect and honor. I again told my rep that their efforts were way beyond the pale and that they were genuinely appreciated.

Finally, later this afternoon my rep emailed me with a response thanking me for my patience and explaining that she not only totally understood my feelings , but felt that my bidder deserved that and more. The bidder's actions were to be placed on file, by the way, for future reference should he choose to bid again in the future.
The good news as I see it is that my bidder was bidding not for what he felt my car is worth but rather for what he could afford. So on that particular bidding day the microcosm of folks bidding were not the ones that were needed. Next move is BRING A TRAILER and I will report on that experience if there is any interest in watching a fellow member age years over the course of a couple of days! Thanks for reading!!

Did anybody actually come inspect the XK during the course of the auction?

Well, C&B will not readily relist the car so that avenue is out. BAT is probably my best shot...keep an eye out. Keep the car? I am still interested in emigrating later this year....87,000 MORE IRS AGENTS!!!. so if the move doesn't come to pass I've got absolutely no problem keeping the car. I've always had a problem with indecisive noncommitment so that probably was an the heart of my dissatisfaction with my auction bidder. That and he was a jerk....just sayin!

Even though these auctions last 7 days, they are national in scope and the chances of someone living close enough to wish to inspect the car prior to bidding are pretty slim. So, no one pursued that. FYI, my auction drew 5,000 hits. As I mentioned earlier, the fact that my top bidder backed up simply told me that the majority of those bidding were bidding from what they could afford as opposed to what they really felt the car was worth. But I would be lying to myself if I denied that the market probably has peaked and is in recession...see what I did there?!!

This coming spring Im actually looking to swap out my 07 XKR Coupe for a Portfolio in literally your spec with your kind of miles (need to sell my X100 XKR, and finish up repairs on my 08 GranTurismo). I saw the cars and bids site and it appears to be quite the lowball for your car. I wish you luck in your sale (that wont be from there!) and I wish my timing worked better since your car is right on. Unless you want to trade down to a 07 XKR Coupe with 77k miles which is a nice daily but not to the level your car is lol.
