Hmmm, really? So why do I have to put a stick of cold butter in the microwave before I can spread it on my toast?

There are many online explanations of modern multi-viscosity oil performance. Below is a link to one I chose at random:

There was one in 2011 for the change from Castrol SLX to Castrol Edge but at that point it was to 5W-20.

Issue: Castrol SLX professional engine oil to be replaced by Castrol EDGE
professional engine oil.

Action: From the dates below Castrol SLX Professional will no longer be
available to order from your Castrol representative:

June 2011- Europe & Africa
September 2011-Turkey, Asia and Pacific
November 2011 - Brazil
2012 - North Americas and LACRO

Details of changes:
WSS-M2C925-A Gasoline:
Castrol SLX Professional Fuel Saver A1 5W-20 replaced by Castrol EDGE Professional A1 5W-20.

The issue is all the information is coming from Castrol not Jaguar.

I would prefer if Jaguar changed oil specifications then send out a TSB.

To date we are taking Castrol's word for what should be used.

The information I posted was a TSB from Jaguar to their dealers. They are the intended audience of TSB's, not us. There may well have been one for the change to 0W-20 as well but dealers have far more access to information than we do.

Castrol will also be sending information to dealers because they supply them and want them to be aware of product changes.

I asked the dealer and all he could show was a document from Castrol.

Will Jag deny a warranty claim if I used this oil for an oil change? It is what is recommended on the Castrol website:

Castrol 5W20 Edge Extended Performance with Titanium Synthetic Motor Oil, 5 qt - Walmart.com

Castrol doesn't underwrite or control the Jaguar warranty.

The oil either does or does not meet the Jag spec. if it does not, you're on your own if you use it and something happens.

The original recommended oil for the 5.0 V8 was Castrol SLX OE, which was replaced sometime in 2012 by Castrol Edge Professional. Now this is the newer version of the Edge Professional, but I can't find info anywhere whether this will meet the 'WSS M2C925-A' spec.

Thanks for posting that, but I took a look at that before. If you notice, it says 'Castrol Edge - European'. If I can find a similar document for the Castrol Edge Extended Performance 5W-20, that would be great, but no luck so far.

Unlike butter multi grade oils change properties as they get heated. As you read through your above info it states that modifiers are added to the base oil to provide protection at higher temperatures. Oils are usually a 3rd rail topic so for me I usually use the mfg. recommendation and the difference between 0W and 5W in my area and my weather doesn't make any difference. My wife's Volvo called for 10W-40 dino oil when we brought it and that's still what I use every 5000 oil change. Just hit 345,000 miles and still doesn't burn any. Use what you feel is best for you.

That seems reasonable - it's manufactured in Germany.

I suspect the SILENT change from one viscosity to another for the exact same engine was done to address the timing chain wear that has now come to light in the public eye.

One thing you can be sure of, no manufacturer will ever admit they have an issue, nor inform older owners of the same engine that they too need to make a change. Here is the proof, none of us got the memo right??

Ok, so I want to change the oil on my car:
Jaguar XKR 2010 Coupe (09.2009 prod date) - 41 000 Km ~ 25476 miles.
I only use the car between 0C (32F) to 40C (104F) - NOT in winter.
In the trunk, I have a bottle of expired 5W20 SLX Profesional.

My official "s-tealer" is only one in the country and I really don't like them, so after a lot of reading I've understood this:

1. Castrol Professional SLX is not available anymore.
2. I need an oil with Ford WSS M2C925-A.
3. On my domestic small European market I've found only three options for this:

- Mobil1 5w20
- Liqui Moly Special Tec AA 5W-20
- From what I've read here, I can also use Castrol Edge Professional 5W20

Let's keep it simple, please. What oil should I choose? My service recommends Liqui Moly Special Tec AA, but I would go with Mobil1.

Oil Viscosity Explained

Cheers,

Don
It's not the base oil viscosity but the additives that change it.

What is a multi-grade oil?

Up until the 1960s it was quite common to change the oil depending on the season and old handbooks from the period recommend oils as low as SAE 5W for very cold ambient conditions. SAE 30 and 40 grades would be typical for Summer use, and sometimes a SAE 50 grade would be substituted if the engine started to use more oil. Multi-grade oils were developed to allow year round use as a result of artificially raising the VI of the oil.

Scientists discovered the use of polymers and the fact that these would expand with heat. VI Improvers are polymer material that expands as the oil warms up. This does NOT thicken the oil as is often stated. It merely slows down the rate at which oil thins out as the temperature rises. The base oil in use in a multi-grade (aka multi-seasonal) is the first number (such as 10W or 20W), where as the second grade is the viscosity achieved using the VI Improver (such as 40 or 50). 20W50 is a base oil of SAE 20W and the viscosity grade at running temperature is SAE 50.

I can't imagine putting a stick of butter in the microwave in the first place.

I've been thru some threads on this and have searched the web because my oil change is coming up soon. This is what I found on the Mobile 1 oil site for 2010 XK:

"Based on what you've told us, your vehicle manufacturer recommends a 5W-20 viscosity and oil that meets Ford WSS M2C925-A. We currently do not offer any motor oils in the United States that meet these specifications."

Castrol Edge Extended Performance does not list WSS M2C925-A either and I can't fine Castrol Edge Professional oe for sale anywhere.

I was just going to buy the oil from my local dealer unless anyone has any more info....
