Default differential clunking

Well I think I done gone and f'd myself.

I changed the fluid on my diff for the second time (no issues the first time, same fluid - Valvoline 75w-140 synthetic). Changed it the other day, then I took a 1000 mile trip to VA and back.

Now I'm noticing a clunking noise from the diff when I turn at low speeds. Nothing at higher speeds.

I'm guessing I didn't add enough fluid back in? Am I screwed or can I try adding some more fluid? Will the diff fail completely and lock up at some point?

I just did mine the other day and posted about my experience, but also my experience with a previous car which required additional friction modifier, beyond what is already in the LSD fluid. My M5 had a bad clunk that was common on all cars, but 100% solved with new fluid and added FM.

Maybe a dumb question, but did your fluid include a friction modifier? If not, I would change it as soon as possible to an LSD fluid with FM..

2008s have an open rear end, no modifier required.

Do you have the PN or year/model for it? How does the different ratio affect everything else?

I am going to try that bar leaks gear repair stuff and see if that works.

Sooooo about that.... turns out it was some loose sockets/wrenches in the boot ontop of the spare tire that was making the noise. I did use the bar leaks stuff but that obviously wasn't the solution.

Easiest fix ever! RESOLVED!
