Default Diff Fluid change

So I'm going to change the diff fluid for my 2003 xj sport, the fluid i'm using is:

Castrol Syntrax Limited Slip 75W-90 Synthetic Gear Oil

I'm pretty sure my car isn't an LSD car, but I did the research and I couldn't find a really definitive answer nor could any of my friends.

Does anyone have an objection to that?

This topic has been addressed on the XJ6 forum and the consensus is that you have nothing to worry about. While I don't recall if the Castrol Syntax was specifically mentioned, the use of synthetic and limited slip were considered. The use of ordinary lube in a limited slip diff. is definitely a bad idea.

Okay cool thanks - I got the castrol cause I read that forum - I should have been more specific:

In my non-jag experience - you can use limited slip diff oil in a non lsd car, but not the other way around. Since I'm not sure if mines an LSD, and I can't figure it out (though i know the majority aren't) I got the LSD fluid... is the "limited slip fluid" thing a problem if it isn't LSD?

There is no OEM limited slip in the X100/X308 cars. Synthetic 75W90 is fine for a diff oil change.

Just finished changing the diff fluid, here's a picture of the fluid I pulled out of it with 68k miles:

It's not the worst I've ever seen but I'm glad I changed it.

I'll let ya'll know if I have any problems running the castrol... which i really hope i won't have to do!
Thanks for the help!

here's the link if the pic didn't post, it didn't show up in my box:

Red Line has stopped labeling their Diff. Gear Oil (LS) Limited slip, and (NS) Non-lilmited slip. Reading their website, virtually identical descriptions are found for 75W-90 (Jag '97-2003 Spec), NEW 75W-110 and 75W-140 products. What they present is "no additional additive required" for limited slip diff. SO, the questions are: Is current Red Line product line suitable for BOTH, NS and LS diffs? And some additive is needed for "some" LSD applications? '97 to '03 is NON-limited slip, so the question is far from academic. In Southern climes (I live in Aiken, SC), where ambient temps are 90 to 100 deg. F. for maybe 2 or 3 months, we read about many XJR owners going to 75W-140 diff. lube. Again, without any apparent "cautions." I have chosen a "mid-point" NEW Red Line product, 75W-110, of which 2 qts rest in their delivery box on the floor next to me. Label reads, in part, "GL-5 High-Performance Lubricant for LIMITED-SLIP DIFFERENTIALS" In absence of a conversation with Red Line, anyone have DEFINITIVE info on application/use for NON-LSD XJR (308)???

I have valvoline syth. 75w-140 in mine and the sky hasn't fallen yet. Have been running non spec fluid in my 85 TVR with a jag rear for years as the fluid for that isn't available. If you're concerned why not just order the jag stuff. You can get it for $80 for 2 liters which isn't a ton more than redline is if you think about it. It isn't like you need to do it every year.

I'm looking at that exact Valvoline gear oil for my XJR and XKR; the VV982 Valvoline Full Synthetic 75W140 gear oil. How long since your change?

In my XKR and XJR I'm running the following fluids:

-Mobil 1 5W40 High Mileage Synthetic ($40-50 per change assuming retail)
-Valvoline Synthetic ATF VV322 ($50 per change assuming retail)
-Valvoline Synpower Brake Fluid ($20 per change)
-GM Supercharger Oil ($16 per change)
-Castrol Syntec Dexron III ATF for PS (new bottles from Corvette I had left over) [$10ish?]
-Pentosin CHF11S for top (idk $60? for the change I did replacing a ram)

I'm not paying $80 for two quarts of gear oil. I can get 2 quarts of the Valvoline for $26 OTD and it's an excellent product.

A month or so in the XJR, about to do the Xk8, can't say I'd recommend it to anyone but I am not one to believe that there is anything special in these difs that a good quality gear oil can't handle. For anyone else I still recommend sticking with the stock stuff.
