Do You Leave Your Key Fob In The Car?

Default Do You Leave Your Key Fob In The Car?

As the title asks, do any of you leave your key in your car while parked in the garage overnight?

I ask because 50% of the time I get in only to remember I left my key on the wall hanger! I was told, sometime ago, that this can lead to a battery drain if the key is left in the car.

So, what is the best practice?

The fob nearby leaves the car in a "standby" mode, which draws far more power from the battery.

The recommended practice seems to be to keep it at least 30 feet from the car, and "lock" the car to shut down lingering courtesy systems (windows and radio are still semi-active)

Leaving your key in the car is asking for being locked out. It happened to my '08 XK 3 times when the car locked with the key inside.

As to battery drain, Vince is most likely correct. I always lock my 2012 XJL when parked in the garage. Usually no issues with the battery even if the car is NOT started for up to a month. A while ago I forgot to lock the car and after only 2 weeks I had a low battery warning when I got into the car. Of course, the XJL uses a whole lot more battery power for its auxiliary components than the XK(R).

Does the XJ have an auxiliary battery?

No, but the new ones do with start stop tech

Default key / fob locked in car

Car was off, I ran into house to get something, did NOT lock the door however when I got back to car the doors were locked. I SEE the key on the seat but.... How do you get it open??? AAA or does Jaguar need to do it?

Do you have a spare remote/key?

Remove the plastic cover on the door handle and use the actual key from the other remote to unlock the car.

No. In fact I keep my key fob in a small metal can (Faraday cage) so it can't communicate with the XKR. Saves battery life.

My cousin left her key fob in her XF for a day on accident and went to her garage in the morning and the battery was dead.
I usually leave my key fob on my table and when I wake up and leave I grab it and go.
