Trunk opens with everything but pushbutton at rear....
...I can open the trunk on my 2001 XJR with the remote fob, with the trunk open button in the dash, with the key in the trunk keyhole, but not with the push button switch on the trunk itself. A minor inconvenience I know, but I suspect the actual button switch itself rather than valet mode, etc. If it is, can anyone confirm the part #? Is it GNC3520AA? I suspect it is but not 100% certain...

I had the same thing, it was the microswitch on the button. One thing to be careful about is that to access it you have to pull the "chrome" trim off the boot lid and the securing method leaves a lot to be desired, it's the classic push in pins that, guess what, are very easy to snap off. Patience wins the day.

A common problem with this switch is not the switch at all but the wiring in the loom at the right hinge. It takes a lot of bending over the years and the conductors break, sometimes within the insulation.
Can you get to the button switch with VOM leads to verify that it is the problem? If tested good the problem will be the wiring at the hinge.

Thanks all. Yeah, I searched past posts, could not see a break in the wires in the loom by visual inspection, but yeah I'll check with a multimeter. Thanks for the advice about the finisher clips as well... Do you know if they are the same as the door panel push in clips? Like these CLIP-CASING - Terrys Jaguar Parts - KTD300003 ?

No, they're spire clips that push onto the plastic tangs that pass through the boot panel, the only way to remove them without damage is to unscrew them, best thing to do is get a flashlight and have a good look before attempting to remove anything. On some models its an M5 flanged nut they're a lot easier to undo so fingers crossed you have the nuts, not clips
