Default Door Rattle

Hi guys,

Have any of you had a problem with a slight rattle in the door? Mine is a facelift 5.0 UK car, and I've got a slight rattle from the passenger door on certain roads.

Originally I thought it was coming from the glovebox, as this has just been replaced under warranty due to a failed damper, however I had my dad in the car yesterday listing while I drove and it seems as though the rattle is coming from the door; somewhere around the seat controls.

The car is under warranty but if it's an easy fix I'll just do it myself as opposed to waiting to get booked in to the dealer.

Cheers.

A rattle at the passenger side is most often related to the buckle of the (unused) seat belt. Seriously! So before doing anything else, move the belt over the seat bolster so you can see the buckle when you are in the driver's seat. Now, is there still a rattle? My experience was that the rattle instantly disappeared.

Definitely not the seatbelt unfortunately, I know that does rattle when it's not sat over the bolster though.

My 2009 developed a occasional metallic rattle (usually at low RPMs)which I swore was coming from the front passenger door and glove box area. I mentioned it to my dealer tech when I was in for an oil change and it turned out to be a loose heatshield under the car. He tightened it up and the rattling went away. Just another possibility to explore.

Thanks Joachim, funnily enough somebody on another forum has mentioned exactly the same thing! I'll have to have a look under the car.

Out of interest, does the reverberation happen consistently when you play music? The reason I ask is that there is a design implementation issue with the sound system in the passenger (left-side) door that many of us are experiencing.

No, nothing to do with music, I don't get any speaker related vibration in the panels.

I just solved a high frequency rattle in my 2007 xk drivers door. I took off the door panel. There I found a plastic bit designed to hold electrical wiring to the door had come loose(?). I pushed it back into its hole... Problem solved.

(I found how to remove the panel buy buying a on line PDF of the service manual. 14$. I'll probably use it again.

Now if I can only locate the louder front end rattle that occurs every time I hit a man hole cover

There is something rolling around at the bottom of my passenger door. I can hear it going from one end to the other under hard cornering or braking. I sounds like something rolling around in the map pocket, but I've checked a dozen times and there's nothing in there!

Most common cause of a rattle at the passenger door is quite simply a minorly bent rim. get the car on a lift and you'll most likely notice either the front passenger or rear passenger rim is slightly bent. Most likely cause - taking a pothole a bit to quickly or a low curb entry into a gas station or the like.

my door/glovebox is now got a high pitched buzz that comes and goes... seems to be worse at 1200 rpm near right side of car (LHD) (hear it worse when im slowing down).. glovebox or door cant tell. Thought it was something I could touch and stop it.. NOPE. Though it was coming from speaker..NOPE. thought maybe it was related to the air conditioning..NOPE. its there with climate on/off. Maybe its got to do with the glovebox and its not working spring??? Frizzle did you ever find out what it was???

So far we have:
1- clip that hold wiring in door
2- Heat Shield
3- bent rim

any other causes?

Real Puzzler Loth

Sounds like resonance. Which you are hitting at low engine speeds.
Did you look under the car? Does it do it with the car stationary?

My money would be something related to the exhaust system, its what resonates at 1200rpm. Something that was attached to the exhaust or has become attached to the exhaust. High pitched buzz is metal to metal.

Follow the exhaust pipes. You already know they are crazy hot.
I would do this for you and look under mine, but its the one day that I have a suit on that I like.

HAHA true. Well this morning and I wanted to make sure it was not ANYTHING in the glovebox and removed what was just papers in the glovebox.... I don't know why but somehow the high pitched buzz is gone. I don't know... will let everyone know if it comes back when I put the papers back in the glovebox!!
