In my case, the car is 'standard' - but then it's a limited-run 'standard' and maybe the ECM map was optimised for 98 RON (US 94). Bugger; maybe I'm going to have to start spending even more on petrol

Yes, Bruce, those are exactly my feelings. Likely an octane issue. Of course, having purchased the car used, I have no way of knowing if it has a ECU flash or not. I will take to the dealer and have them reflash it with the stock version, just in case.
