Default External temperature saying -40°c

Hi everyone,

But if a weird one, since I've had the engine rebuilt and body panels off the interior screen now says the external temperature is -40°c. Not sure what is causing this, any help would be much appreciated

Maybe the ambient sensor in the dash behind the slotted area is disconnected?

Has the front bumper been removed/replaced? If so, check the Ambient Air Temperature Sensor on the bracket behind it.

It has been removed, i couldn't find the sensor anywhere? I looked online and saw there's one under the nearside mirror, could you tell me where the bracket is please?

I haven't had to get to this myself (yet!) but the JEPC diagram shows it in the centre:

Bracket is item 2 and sensor is item 6. Knowing what they look like could help .......

There have been other entries and threads on this subject several years ago. Suggest you utilize the search box at the upper right corner of this screen.

The OP's car is a 5 litre so, as he says, it is in the left hand wing mirror but the temperature supposedly defaults to 20 deg C if it is disconnected.

I don't know what year your car is and I'm not sure if this is your issue, but I had this problem.

There is a Technical Service Bulletin for a software upgrade (copy attached, see item #2) that addresses a temperature problem. In my car, when the outside temp dropped below 59 degrees F, the temp would show as 0 degrees F. After the software upgrade, the problem was fixed.

Hope this helps.

Hi, no this is something else entirely, it's not changing temperature at all, staying at -40 and the AC doesn't work because of this

I've tested the cables all the way back to the ECU and there is a good connection there.. not sure what is going on!

It was the first time I started the car in -40 that I decided a block heater was necessary.

Back to the issue, sounds like the control module... SDD?
But I am surprised there are no codes

I don't have SDD unfortunately
Where's the control module for this?
It brought up a P0073 code

If you've done these tests as you mention Paul, you've done all you can do without SDD. And with SDD it appears you can only check the datalogger Temp sense voltage:
There's no separate module for the sensor. It feeds directly into the ECU
