Default Future classic?

Now that the XK bloodline has come to the "end of days", what are your opinions regarding the long term appeal of the XKR

What a beautiful car, which still takes my breath away every time I take the covers off

My impression is that this "sports tourer" will be highly sought after in a year or two, because I do not see a present or future equivalent.

I love the XF, but where does the missus put her shopping?

I reckon mine will be a keeper!

It's hard to tell if the XK will follow the the acclimates of the E-Type. It is more of a refined/evolved E-Type so it is hard to tell. It is also interesting to me that the E-Type coupe was a show stopper in the automotive world but the convertible is commanding a lot more value. I have for the most part purchased cars that I liked and enjoyed driving. I also moved on to others when I got tired of what I had. So as beautiful as I think my XKR is some time I'll move on from it but not for the next 10 years or so. Anyway I'm a 2 style person with the long smooth rounded curves as one and the flat wedge shape as the other. I am now back to smooth.

Err, think you mean the F-Type - plenty of luggage space in an XF (4-door saloon).

I think all of the Jag sports/GT models become classics eventually. Every model that comes out, with the exception of the E-Type, gets a chorus of moaning & complaining that "It's not a proper Jag". That eventually dies down - 20 years later, it's the classic model that the latest one gets compared to.
  • They didn't like the XJ-S: too angular, too heavy, not sporting enough
  • They didn't like the XK8: Jags don't have V8s, it's trying to evoke the E-Type but the proportions are wrong
  • They didn't like the XK: not enough curves, pointless hatchback, silly rear seats
  • They don't like the F-Type: wrong 'mouth', the rear is trying to evoke the E-Type but it looks wrong, there's no rear seats

Basically, people don't like change. But Jags are (generally) well-designed and attractive cars, they're comfortable & luxurious yet fast, and the sports/GT models are built in relatively small numbers so they have rarity value. Obviously the higher-spec variants tend to be more sought after; in the XK range, it will probably be the 5.0 XKR (and especially the R-S) that will be more desirable. Limited editions like the 2008 R-S, the Portfolio, the 75, the Dynamic R and the R-S GT may or may not have extra appeal.

My concern is that these complex beasts will become more difficult to maintain as they get older, due to their reliance on electronics and a diagnostic/management system that requires hardware & software platforms that will become increasingly obsolete.

I think the jury is still out on the XJS and the XK8.

This will be a sought after car based on looks alone and worthy track car if tuners can straighten out spring and shocks.

The suspension leaves a little to be desired, but I think that can be easily fixed.

Prices will likely continue to fall for 3-5 years until a new group of enthusiasts discover the car and realize it's not only a desirable car from the past, but a good value even with the higher expected cost to maintain.

Pricing for a good-condition XJ-S started rising a while back, and there is at least one company (KWE) refurbishing/upgrading them. XK8 is still too new.

This last version of the XK line will be sought after in time because it has classic Jaguar lines and is just plain timeless in its beauty. As we gravitate to lower powered vehicles and electrics, our luxurious XKs and their glorious V8s will connect people to an earlier time when it wasn't all about mpg and CO2.
