I was air drumming to Def Leppard at a stop light and accidentally hit the gear shifter B) It sank a bit at the time and retracted when I turned off the car. No problems shifting into rear or park. BUT when I restarted the car, it won't rise! It shifts alright though i.e. I can rotate to shift while its still sunk into its caddy.
I am thinking at best, the shifter assembly is dislodged and I can reseat it? and at the worst, I will need to drop in a replacement shifter assembly.
I looked at some threads and looks like I can un-glue the shifter cover, access the center bolt, and mess about in there. Please advise on that. And also will appreciate links to parts website. I am in the US. (Nevada).
The Workshop Manual at least explains the two scenarios when the shifter doesn't rise:
If the JaguarDrive selector does not rise from the console when the engine is started, but electrical power is supplied to the selector, the retracted selector can still be rotated to make selections. If electrical power to the JaguarDrive selector is lost, the selector will not rise from the console when the engine is started and the retracted selector will not rotate.
Try either a suction cup or a stick hot-glued to the top, see if it will reengage when it's pulled up. Double-stick mounting tape would also work for this.
I had to replace mine. The shift unit cost me $900. The good news is that it is very easy to replace. Just 4 screws and unplug the connectors. Be very careful removing the wood trim. If you break it it costs $500. Good luck.
I could pop the shifter up but it wasn't holding up consistently, kinda floppy. And today it went into "gear box malfunction". Luckily, I could muscle it into `S` and made my way back home. I think it needs a replacement as suggested by @95 Cat -- any idea where I can order this part?

I could use a heat gun to pop off the lid from the shifter. Ended up scoring it quite a bit but I was like what the heck, if this works, I'll get some fancy new lid. Alas, that wasn't the case. The underlying assembly doesn't rise *at all*. So, I ordered the part with the local Jaguar dealer. It is a $1k part. The good news is that it should be here in 1-2 days. With the fall weather setting in, I will be grateful to have the car operational again.
In the meantime, are there any videos detailing the steps to remove the old part and install the new one?
Thanks a lot guys!
ps I intend to play "Live to Rise" by Soundgarden once this is all working.
The workshop manual shows this and I have a wood trim. Are there tabs underneath? How do I access them? Is there a special tool that won't damage the trim?
Get yourself a set of those plastic trim removal tools, and pry up gently near each tab, and work yourself from the rear (near cup holders) toward the front.
Something like these, under $10 on Amazon:

It did cost me $1k in the part and a trim tool as suggested in this thread. Of all the tools this was the most vicious looking and worked flawlessly. There are 8 tabs underneath the trim panel. I went up the right side first and then the left side, the center ones popped out easy enough. I got the schematic from elsewhere on these forums. There are four screws holding the assembly, easy to take out and put in the new part. I had to be a little careful with removing the connector. There's a red tab that needs to be pushed before the connector can be pulled out of the socket. Popped in the new part, the XKR started right up! On the bright side, the dynamic mode etc buttons feel super solid now.
Thanks a lot everyone! Really appreciate the assist!
Well atleast we all know now this is the only way you could break the rotator gear shifter knob in a jag and that's a good thing when it could only be broken by a tremendous amount of force
