Default The Geico Saga

I tapped a dear last week, slowed to maybe 15mph but it hurt him in RR hind quarter.
My 2008 xk now has a trashed rf headlight. damaged front bumper cover, ruined SAP, broken fog light, misaligned bumper to rf fnder.
went geico today for estimate... I'll update as we progress.

Sorry for your loss. Fortunately, you weren't injured. Hopefully, there's no hidden damage.

Although the damage appears to be minor, don't be surprised if GEICO totals your 2007 XK convertible. Parts are expensive and may be hard to find. How many miles and was it previously damaged?

Low mileage plus recent "before" photos proving outstanding condition could help you prove a higher value that supports repairing instead of a total loss.

Good luck!

But, and most importantly, is the 'dear' still okay?

I think they'll either offer (very) used parts or total it.
we"ll see.

Expect them to total it and offer you a less than generous sum. Its just a first offer, pull comps. Make sure they also include paid taxes, registration fees etc.

If Geico wants to total it and offers a low number, perhaps you can buy it back for a lesser amount and have it repaired yourself. Guess you'll just have to see what they do. Hopefully they'll not total it.

Thanks Stuart,
when I spoke with 'appraiser' off the record he said Geico was the worst in regard to settling fairly.

Let me begin with a sigh of relief, they are not going to total the car (as yet).
I used to operate a repair shop and wrote many an estimate.

My estimate includes:
a new headlight
a new secondary air pump
a replacement wheel
a fog light bracket
a front crash pad,
straightening several bumper support areas
repairing and refinishing the front bumper cover

Assuming good used parts are available my rough estimate is @ $4,500~$6,000

************************************************** ****

Geico’s initial estimate includes:

Aligning the headlight

Replacing the fog light bracket

Repairing and refinishing the front bumper

1st go around, total = $600.00 +/-

Someone did a hit and run on my worn 03 XK8. Badly damaged LF fender, small crease on drivers door. I went to my State Farm recommended (expensive) body shop. I expected them to total the car and give me a small check maybe based on the recycling value. I was quite surprised when the estimate was 9k w/ new fender (4k), body work and paint. When I asked, they wrote me a check. Then sold the car (which needed lots of work) for 4,500. Also why used parts? Because it's a Jaguar? I hear the settlement horror stories then pay a little more to get a good insurance company.

I don't know why other than to save money on their part. I think I'm paying pretty high rates...$2400 annually for one jag and one old mazda! The Jag is my daily driver, the mazda a back up. I'll look at changing once this one is settled. Driving @ 8K miles annually. No accidents prior to this one, no tickets, old (74YO).

Wow, seems like a lot considering low mileage, no accidents or tickets. I'd check other companies. Did someone send your insurance a picture of same color Jag (driver wearing a helmet) racing somewhere? For my 06 and 07 Jags, I pay a little under 1,000 total. Policy is 500 deductible. No tickets (yet, I've only had the XKR for 6 mos), no accidents, drive less than 15k/yr. I joined the AARP club a long time ago (67). I've been with State Farm for years. Do have my house and other cars w them so some discount. What is really great about State Farm (no I don't get a commission or anything) is that they even go after the other driver for the deductible. On the 03, also got a check for 500.

Another X100/150 owner. I bought a low mileage 07 XKR. 06 is gathering dust in the garage.

If you think your car insurance is expensive now, just wait for your renewal rates - you're in for a big shock!

First year with Travelers, cost me just under $1,000 per year for just the XK, there are 4 other cars on the policy and 3 drivers; also have my homeowners with them

No idea why my insurance is so much lower. Multiple cars bundled w/ house. Several driven less than 10k/yr. 67 YO. 30+ years w/ same company. Just 2 claims (not responsible for either) and one speeding ticket (25 years ago). Live in a small suburb outside of Sac. Married.

Stuart, just cracked up about your description of your wife's car. We just bought a low mileage one owner 2017 Pilot Touring for my wife. Immaculate 2 mos ago. Now it's a storage shed. Dirty inside and out.

Perfect driving record, no accidents, 20+ years with the same company and they raised my rates 400% (over the last 2 years). Their reason? I live in Florida, now considered one of the most expensive states for insurance (increased weather, theft, accident & uninsured driver claims). Checked with other companies and found the same to be true for all of the big companies.
