Default Guide to and Repairing XK Key Fob?

Folks........I am new here but just got my third XK8, 2007 convertible. I am a technician but I am new to electronic key fobs. I figured out how to pop it open for battery replacement, but one of my fobs has a dead Lock Door button. Are the switches prone to fail?

All advice is appreciated.

both my kyefobs didn't work when I got my 98 xkr, new batteries and a thorough cleaning of them(took them apart completely) especially the contact areas, got them working OK, might be worth a try,
Cheers!

Default Short answer is yes

Lots of experience here with key fobs. Generally battery replacement and alcohol cleaning of contacts, under the rubber pad, does help. But yes the small switches can breaks but is repairable if you have a steady hand and are good with a soldering iron.

Welcome to the forum Tim.

I've moved your post to the X150 section for a better response.

The " XK8 " in the title may still be a bit misleading.

Tim,
It appears that you have both Smartkey fobs, and one works perfectly including to lock and unlock the doors but the other doesn't lock or unlock the doors. I agree with your diagnosis that it has a bad switch. Have you tried swapping the batteries?

Note that there are different X150 Smartkey fobs for different model years, and they're not interchangeable. Early 4.2L models use a single-channel fob and later models use a multi-channel fob. To reprogram a used fob, it must first be cleared - electronically divorced - from its parent vehicle. It's a complex process, but can be done by a knowledgeable technician with the right equipment. For details, see this old thread:
https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...ion%85-171095/

If you buy a used Smartkey, make sure the frequency (single or multi channel) is compatible with your model year and that you get a money-back guarantee from the seller if it doesn't work

We get a lot of reports of failing fob microswitches on earlier models but I can't recall seeing any for X150 yet. However, plenty of listings for microswitches on ebay UK and Amazon so clearly much in demand.
