Default Hard Downshift Question

My 2008 XK has 54K on the clock. Recently I have noticed an intermittent problem with the transmission. When coming to a stop, gradually not rapidly, the transmission "clunks" from second to first.

I have a bumper to bumper warranty, which will cover the transmission, if in fact this is a mechanical defect. That said, I'm curious if anyone out there is familiar with what I have described?

Thanks in advance....

Okay, I get it! Looks like this is by no means a common problem...

Two possibilities I'm aware of. One is battery, although you'd likely notice bumpy downshifts between all gears, not just 2nd to 1st. Other would be that the transmission could maybe use a service. Jaguar claim it's "sealed for life" and don't routinely service transmission units as part of the service schedule but it's known among owners of BMWs with the 6HP transmissions that transmission servicing can cure and/or prevent this.

Does it happen all the time or only for the first few minutes after the car is started from cold? Mine does the latter, it gets better once the car has warmed up. This would suggest that the transmission fluid is past its' best, it's on my to-do list for spring-time.

It seems these ZF boxes have a lurch downshift from 2 to 1 in certain cars. Apparently this was very prevalent in X350 Jaguar XJS and S Types. I personally don't think that fluid has anything to do with the issue. Seems like an electronics thing.

You might have the TCM adaptations reset by the dealer and see if that helps.

Extremely common problem on all cars that use the ZF 6 speed. Have you had the TCM flashed with the lastest software?

Search on the internet for "The Lurch". The guy is over the top but he did buy his Jaguar new and he does document the different versions of "The Lurch" quite well.

My input for what it's worth.... 2010 XKR with 62,000 miles, and not all of them gentle. I've never felt a hard downshift in any gear, even when Overdoing it with the flappy paddles. Maybe time for you to bring it to the dealer?
