The heat shield below the petrol tank on my 2010 xkr 5 litre has a snapped fixing stud. I really didn't want to replace the tank support strap for one stud so thought id have a go at repairing it without removing anything.
I bought a heat shield repair kit which includes aluminium discs to repair the heat shield and push on retaining washers.
I used a 6mm pan head bolt with a large integrated washer and ground the head of the bolt off leaving just the washer. I then ground off the remains of the stud on the tank strap with a dremel and a small grinding wheel, leaving a clean bright steel area to attach my new stud. I used JB weld to attach the new bolt and supported it in position with a small bottle jack
until it had fully hardened.
The next day I gave the heat shield repair disc a layer of JB weld and placed it into position then pushed the retaining washer up the bolt into place. I fully expect the heat shield to fail around the remaining studs, but when it does ill cut the nuts off the studs with a slitting disc rather than trying to undo them which results in the stud snapping off the support strap, then JB weld a repair disc in place and push on a retaining washer.
Ive no idea how long it will last for, but I think for a small outlay and very little time spent its worth a go.
