Unhappy help, help, please car fault messages

hi, big problem today. Started car to go to work, drive 1mile, then lights and messages on dash, abs light [amber]and dsc light stayed on, messages say engine fault, cats systemfailure,[ book says adaptive damping system fault for this] and dsc not available. Engine management light wasn't on, the small amber engine picture. Car went into limp mode and i got home. Went out after 15 minutes started car all back to normal no messages no lights, drove it down the drive and back. In garage now, don't know what to do, afraid to drive it incase stops or damage. A fluids ok, battery ok, checked. Car had new front discs and pads done 1 month ago and all new filters and service. Erratic idle sometimes. Any thoughts.

Even though you say the battery is ok, check it again.

You have too many faults at once for it not to be related to the battery. You may also want to check that your ground connections are clean and tight.

Check the voltages with engine off and with engine running. Also check the current drain on the battery when the car has been stood for at 1 hour.

Hope this helps,

For the time being forget the codes. That battery voltage is way too low after an hour. You should be seeing around 12.4V.

First thing to do is fully charge it. Then do a hard reset to clear the computers memory. You will need the radio code before you do this.

Then take the car for a run and see what, if any codes you have then.

Something to think about if you don't use the car regularly, get yourself a CTEK smart charger. Best money you will ever spend.

With that age and voltage there is no doubt the battery is finished.

well this is the story now, had to be somewhere so went out started car, no warnings, all ok. Drove 15miles round trip no problems , back home now ,batttry reads 12.8. Will get a new battery, one in car says 600amp,,jag sticker,on it,should i go stronger ampage. Guy in shop says will fit with no loss of power, just gets another battery and connects jump lead leadsfrom doner battery + to car power lead, same with - to - lead, loosen terminals, Then take out old battery, pop in new one, fit terminals and take off leads, job done, and no power loss issues, car is used nearly everday so charge should be good.
Another point is sometimes when starting i press brake hard then button, makes a click switches off, do again then starts.

When getting a new battery, think seriously about getting an AGM type battery. They are more expensive than the but more effective than the lead acid type. See other threads on this forum dealing with battery issues/replacement.

Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM) batteries are high-performance versions of the classic lead-acid battery - instead of having acid sloshing around in them, they have fibreglass pads soaked in acid sandwiched between lead plates, and there are usually a lot more plates. So, in the same physical volume, they deliver a larger power reserve.

I put an Odyssey PC1350 in my XK8, and it did a good job. The same model is apparently recommended for the XK. Most of the other AGM batteries discussed on the forum are brands that aren't available over here.

I was under the impression that you had ordered a CTEK Charger.

Did you ever get it and put it on the battery as provided in the links that I sent you?

In UK and probably Ireland Varta are/were what Jag fitted when built. Maybe Car Battery - Car Batteries - Motorcycle Batteries - Leisure Batteries - Cheap Prices! also cover Ireland? They deliver direct and fast, if so.

well guys got new battery fitted, went for bosch AGM, well it started first time, travelled 2miles and pulled in for fuel, went to start, pressed brake pedal then button, it made the click sound and no go, repeated then started. Carried on for another 5 miles, stopped to talk to a friend, got in, done start procedure, turned over for maybe 3-4 seconds then died. Seems i have to give the brake pedal 2 presses then button then goes. W hen i got home new battery reads 12.85, what now.
