Help! JCNA judge claims Selena wheels on my 2009 XKR not correct
Had a most disappointing day last weekend when I entered my 2009 Jaguar XKR Portfolio coupe in a JCNA sanctioned Concurs de Elegance (Driven Class - D11).
The Judges deducted a full 20 points because the vehicle came equipped with 20" 15-spoke Selena wheel in shadow grey finish. Because the Selena wheel does not show in the JCNA Concurs Rule Book they deducted the maximum points. No amount of discussion could dissuade the judge other than he told me to file a protest with the JCNA. None of the officials took any time to try an ascertain whether the wheels were correct.
I have since run my VIN on the decoder and it shows the Selena wheels. The club president is now telling me the 2009 XKR Portfolios came with Cremona 5 spoke wheel as standard. He is using as a reference the book on XK/XKR's by Nigel Thorley. I have the Jaguar sales literature which specifically states the 2009 XKR Portfolio comes equipped with the Selena wheels. Its been discounted by the club president...not sure why.
It seems to me the effort now is to circle the wagons to the benefit of the club, the judges and JCNA as opposed to the possibility there is a discrepancy in the JCNA reference materials and they need to be corrected to show the Selena wheels are correct.
Does anyone out there have any advice or has anyone run into a similar situation? Any and all comments and advice is welcomed.
(FYI - This car was a 1st place finisher a year ago at another JCNA sanctioned Concurs).

Republican judges who reject facts?
Anyway, you'll probably need three independent references, such as sales info (have), build sheets, spec sheet runs from sources like KBB, NADA and such may help.
A window sticker would be cool, maybe some other literature directly from Jaguar.
And the biggest one; Find the judges' higher-ups and persuade THEM.
Sucks though, as others' stupidity can be infuriating.

FWA if you wish to solve this quickly please call me. I will post phone in a private e mail. Second if you wish to solve an issue this is not the right forum to do so. There is a protest procedure that may be used. I would be interested in your factory literature as the Judges guide (not NT) appendix for wheels and tires comes direct from Jaguar each year. So please read your mail and let's solve this one way or another.

Generally, it is a good resource but there are a great number of inaccuracies in Nigel Thorley's book. In the book, he actually captions the Liquid Silver XKR portfolio as having Cremona wheels when it clearly has Selenas. In the appendices, there is a chart on the available allow wheels that lists the Selenas as being available only for UK model year 2011 (US model year 2012). This is clearly incorrect since the picture of the silver XKR Portfolio is a 4.2 XKR and thus pre-US model year 2010/UK 2009. As listed above by other posters, the US model year 2009 Porfolios came with Selenas, not Cremonas.
By pointing out the clear inaccuracy of his resource, I hope you can get your 20 points back. Ridiculous...the judge here is someone who doesn't know modern Jags.

Here's a video from 2008 featuring a press review of the 2009 XKR Portfolio, driving a press car from Jaguar. It's wearing Selenas. If Nigel Thorley's book were correct, then it would be impossible for this video to exist since Thorley states these wheels were only available for 2011 (UK model year) and later cars.

Special Editions: Confusion by design...
Thorley's book apparently does not take into account the confusion caused by X150 model year differences between cars sold in North America, Europe, and other markets. The 4.2L X150 began as a 2006 model in Europe and a 2007 model in North America. As a result, 5.0L models arrived as 2009 models in Europe and 2010 models in North America. There were special edition models that were sold in different markets. For example, the UK had a 2008 4.2L XKR-S that was not available in the US. And the 4.2L XKR Portfolios that were sold in the US as 2008 and 2009 models came in exclusive exterior paint colors - Celestial Black for 2008 and Shadow Grey for 2009, but Liquid Silver was available as an option for UK 4.2L Portfolios.
And then there are the differences in Special Edition wheels. Chrome Cremona (2008 US Portfolio), Shadow Chrome Selena (2009 US Portfolio), and Vortex (2008 UK XKR-S).
There are too many differences to list here. Bottom line is that Thorley's book is not completely accurate.

Interesting that it shows "R Performance Brakes". At first I thought that meant it had the optional Alcon Performance Brake Package, but it does not. Reading further revealed it had the "Alloy Space Saver Wheel", which was not available with Alcons since it didn't clear the calipers. Instead, a 12v inflator and a can of tire sealant was included with the Alcons.

First, it is extremely difficult for JCNA judges to know all the variants of modern Jaguars (and I speak as a JCNA Chief Judge) and with regard to wheels, the subject is a minefield. Second, all and any wheels offered by Jaguar for the XK would be considered correct. If it is available from Jaguar for this car then a deduction should not have been made. Third, in light of the above, judges should be very careful about assigning deductions -especially major deductions. Fourth, Nigel Thorley's books, while very useful, and excellent in most regards, deal primarily with the UK variants. He has little or no information on models destined for other markets and in some instances (I am think now of his book on the Series III XJ models) he has factual errors. His books must not be relied upon for JCNA concours purposes. Official Jaguar literature (and this includes the accessory catalogues) are the recognized sources. Sixth: the JCNA Judging Guides are incomplete.
Finally, as George Camp has properly pointed out, there is a protest procedure within the JCNA organization. Your deduction is not valid and you have ample material to prove that. The points will be returned to you if you follow the protest procedure.

Wow, I can feel your frustration.
Had this happen at a major dog show.
Judge started throwing dogs out of the ring because their undercoat was showing.
In the breed standard it says having the undercoat showing was acceptable.
The first dog he through out was last years winner.
You could here the "oooooh" from outside the building.
Then he threw out the second dog, and the third...
and the fourth...
I'm amazed at how the reaction did not turn to violence, good people with that breed of dog.

Not sure what this means?
Why is this not the right forum? Seems to me the perfect place for the OP to ask for additional literature to prove his case... Not that he should have to a simple google search I'm sure would pull up plenty enough images of the '09 model with the wheels in question on them. Not saying that google images should be a official reference point, but at what point does common sense play a factor? 1000 images of different cars with the wheels in question should say it all... Whats the old saying "a picture is worth a 1000 words"

TT when you participate in a sanctioned concours you agree to follow the rules. This can and will be solved within the organization which in its 60th year had has some experience. Providing images and literature is fine but to ask for comments and advise on the situation is misplaced here. Comments re: Judges (read volunteers at $0) take time for training in a system that is not one show centered. The results of all of the concours from Mexico to Canada all go toward EOY awards. It is not my system it is the Clubs system and although not perfect it does work well. So my comment was toward the advise and comment part which is not here! I encourage all to get out and participate at some level--it is to be fun and toward improvement of the Marque--which it does.

I fail to see where a thread like this doesn't apply to a public forum that is all about sharing information? I don't see the OP's OP as negative towards the JCNA organization. More a tone of frustration and I think it'll get sorted out in the end where if he hadn't posted it might not have (had you not reached out or he gotten info to reach out to the club). At the end of the day we are all here because we enjoy our cars and sharing our experiences.

I'm with Ranchero50, I didn't see the OP's comment as derogatory towards the JCNA.
He'd been docked 20 points for a reason he disagreed with and was asking the opinion and advice of others to back up his own ideas and to be sure of his facts before appealing.
Opinions and advice are what we do here.
