Default How do I replace the brake light bulb?

Never thought I'd ask that one.

Do I have to remove the two cylindrical nuts off the house and remove the whole lamp assembly? Or is there another way?

It's the passenger brake lamp.

Thanks in advance!

There is a cover over the tail lamp assembly. Remove the cover and you have access to the bulbs.

I took note of the oval shaped rubber shield and plug, but could not get it out. What is the trick? I squeezed the clips (looks like 4) and one clip snapped off, so I stopped. Do I pull on the rubber gasket?

2007 XK Convertible.

Just noticed you have a 2007. This forum is for XK8/XKR. Production ended 2006. Don't know if the procedure is the same. I suggest you ask on the XK forum.

I just went through this on my 08, I found the instructions in the Owner's Manual very helpful but there was one technical error. Yes you have to remove BOTH of those cylindrical nuts I think they ar 7MM (You'll need a deep well socket). But first you need to remove that black plastic trim piece attached to the car with two plastic snap fittings. I was able to work it free with a large flat bladed screw driver. Then you remove the two nuts mentioned earlier. You should now be able to "tug" the entire lens assemble away and out of the car. I unhooked all of the electrical connections and moved the assembly to my work bench to change the bulb and do a general cleaning.

Good luck

Tom

Default Please help.

Sorry to resurrect this thread, but I need to replace my rear brake bulb and although I have done this before on the other side of the car, I ended up breaking off the point of the reflector when trying to remove the light cluster from the car.

What is the secret to the "tug". I've undone the two nuts, removed the plastic and the light cluster is now loose, but I cannot get it to part with the car. When I did this on the other side the cluster "pivoted" as you can only get a good grip on one side of the cluster and this cause the pointed edge (down the side of the body) to dig in and snap off, but at least that then freed the unit and it came away.

I now want to do this on the other side, but without breaking the reflector.

Any pointers as to how to remove the light cluster?

Thanks.

PS. What an awful design!!!! What with the 70's electric ariel, maybe Ian Callum isn't such a brilliant designer!

There is a little trick. There are two long 7mm nuts you have to remove. The one you can reach easily from the access panel and the other that's more toward the center of the tail light that you have to pull the side panel back to get. I turned my 1/4 inch extension around and put the "female" end over the end of the stud after I removed the nuts. A light tap and the light will pop right out.
