Default Engine Ping/Detonation

Purchased an 07 XK last July. It had a mild ping on low speed when under load, like a hill. I found TSB JTB00046 and had the local dealer install it a few weeks ago.

It seemed to cure the original problem but now I get the ping climbing hills at lower RPM's.

Anyone else have this problem? Any solutions besides using a lower gear? The dealer suggested a gas additive but, obviously, something is wrong with timing and/or fuel ratios.

First question would be what grade of fuel are you using?

Using premium gas. Regarding cats and coils, car only has 32k miles. That would be early for those kind of problems. Wouldn't bad coil also cause misfire at idle?

Now you've got me curious about my 07 XK, bought in Nov.
No hills to climb here in IL, so I hope I'm not surprised on a future road trip!

If you're getting knock/ping, the car may be throwing a few diagnostic codes. Would be worth getting hold of an OBDII reader and seeing if there are any.

Other possible sources of knocking:
  • Fuel pump issues, causing fuel starvation under load
  • Air leaks in the induction system, messing with the air/fuel ratio
  • Problems with the variable valve timing (VCT) system

Thanks. Don't think it's fuel starvation because it runs great at higher RPMs. Will check for leaks in induction system. Guess I'll have to have the dealer check for VVT issues.

The ping is a known 07 problem so might have to live with it. They must have changed something besides the firmware for 08 and beyon.

I am having ping issues on my '07 XKR, but I put a bottle of Techron in this tank and now I think it is a little better now that I'm almost at the end of this tank, but I can't be sure.

When I'm driving steep hills (1500m plus above sea level) at low rpm in manual mode with my 2007 xkr, I have a bit of ping. Never in automatic mode (D or S) though. I always fill up with highest grade fuel available. On normal landscapes (flat country with max 8 degree slopes up to 1500m above sea level), the engine never pings.

Could be the lower pressure at altitude is slightly fooling the ECM - but then, if you apply full throttle at low revs in any manual car, you will sometimes get pinging. In auto, the TCM downshifts to keep the revs up & prevent it, thus protecting the engine.

In high altitude markets (Utah, Colorado etc. premium actually is only 89 octane and regular is 85 for that reason. Sucks for turbo drivers.
