Interesting to see who bought their XK brand new
new here and who still has them, or are we all second handers.

No one takes a $100k hit, they buy new and get out at $35k loss or buy used and take a $40k loss.
Its like in the old Soviet Union, first prize was a brand new Lada, second prize was 2 brand new Ladas.

Back to the original Thread.......I purchased my 2010 XK from the original owner who actually bought it new!! He paid close to $90,000... I got it for less than half.(6 years ago).....although it's value is dropping as I'm writing this post! I was considering the F Type back then, but the ride was too firm for my tastes.

Boca so the original owner paid $45k for for a brand new car when it was the bees knees. You paid $45k and had to live with fear of burning coolant.
I can top that. I paid more than the other owner for a has-been and only put 10% of the miles on the car. Its like marrying Miss United Kingdom- after she ran out of social security. (I drive it less than 200 miles a year)
God we are some penny-wise pound-foolish folks. On the upside, I had to join this support group and its made me a hyper-defensive driver, if someone hits me, insurance will total the car and pay what the shittiest XKR sells for according to some book that has never bought or sold a car at the prices they publish.

Went through that very situation with my XJR, Q&C. Could not have stated it better. I think they gave me 12k for it :-(.
In my defense, There are many drivers on the road here that have never learned how to properly drive in the winter, let alone any other time of year.
back to the theme of the thread, got it in 2010 i think. 30,000 miles on her. With that awesome 160,000 km, 6 year jaguar warranty.
Don’t worry, I used it well.
But I never did look at my cars as ‘investments’. I use them and expect to lose money on them. But it is a fun way to lose money.

Bought my 2012 as a CPO one owner car with 6K on the clock. Original owner paid $110 K . I bought in 2014 for $75K and added 20K miles. Sold it 12/2019 for $35K and just placed my order for a 2020 C8 convertible. Enjoy the ride.
I have no plans to sell my F-type which I purchased new. Well, actually, I leased it first but decided to keep it at the end. So I am both the first and the last sucker on your list. Surprisingly, on per mile basis, F-type it isn't my most expensive car. However, I drive it a bit more than you do your XKR.
I also live in fear of burning coolant, slowly forming sludge, suspicious engine ticking (is it timing chain?!) and so on . You just never know...

We all do here! I know of a few others that have 5L modern Jags that are not on the forum and they just blissfully enjoy their cars!
The first owner of my 2015 kept it 3 years and took a 50% hit. In the 2 years I've had it, I've also taken a 50% hit. This has to be the fastest depreciating Jaguar I've owned but both the first owner and me agree, it's been money well spent.

Interesting take, but you won't gain any friends by pointing this out. I run tally for all my cars, costs on some vastly exceed purchase price (not adjusted for inflation) but this is mostly the result of them being classic cars.

Used car buyers have real fear, they dont know if the last guy took the car to a detail shop where they take 50% of the clearcoat off, paint job is the most expensive part on the car, and the only thing that cant be bought used. They dont know if previous owner took it to the beach or innocently drove through some serious puddle.
Here is the key takeaway; if you have maintained it, your car wont depreciate unless you sell it- which the insurance company can force you to do, over something as small as a headlight or rat chewing wiring harness, thanks to very high replacement cost. Just happened to my neighbor and top of the line Merc saloon, he took a real bath.
P.s. Harry's Garage said the same thing as you- his Project 8 and Project 7 are the lest expensive cars to own.
I have an 07 just over a year paid $27k can dollars with 55 k miles . Probably worth $20 k now so probably % is same but I expect a slower drop from here but bigger repair bills . I will never lose what the original owner did though in de appreciation
I am the 3rd owner of my 2006xk,paid £19.300 for the car 46.000miles,have owned it 5 years and it probably loses around£1500 a year.Do I care no not one bit, when I press that start button and hear that V8 engine.

Bought a 175 XKR used with 1,000 miles in 2012. Sold the 175 in 2013, made $15,000 on it, long story, and bought a 2013 XKR new. Sold the 2013, November 2015, because I had too many cars and wanted a convertible. Bought a convertible 2014 XKR, dynamic R, last year which I'll keep for a while. All XKR's where black.

Thanks Guy. I have no interesting in tracking my cars. I enjoy them most by knowing they are maintained to the best possible condition--no expense spared. When I get in my XKR I know it is as perfect as I can have it. It never goes out in the rain or snow. It remains in my heated 6-7 car garage for 4 months during the winter. I did a lot of maintenance on it over the winter and can't wait for the spring and good weather. I thought about putting chrome rims and stripes on the zero turn, but refrained from doing so, knowing people will know I'm over the top.
MSRP was $101750. I paid $85K. Lease buyout was $51K (dealer tried to make money on the back end of the lease). I spent about $12K on out-of pocket expenses, multiple set of tires (I race it) and a new flywheel being the bulk of this. Market value today is $49K.
So it cost me ~$7200/year ($600 mo) in depreciation and ~$2400/year ($200/mo) in maintenance. If not for racing-related expenses, and if not for manual transmission issues, it would be very good value already. However, longer I hold to it, better these numbers would look as I can amortize initial depreciation over longer period of time. At around 10 years mark I expect numbers will be comparable to leasing a new Civic.
Interestingly, $200 - $250/mo is what takes almost any performance car of almost any vintage for me to actively keep on the road.
