Did mine as well at 35%. According to my tint guy he said that most tint's show darker on the "tint meter". Mine came out at 27%. Mainly because the sides are already have some tint in the factory glass.
In MD our law is I think 70% like NY, but having had some spots burned off by the dermatologist with a basal cell diagnosis gave me a doctors note that allows it. Just took the note to MVA and they gave me a legal "pass" to tint due to the basal cell.
Tint makes such a difference on heat, leather preservation and glare....oh and of course my skin....
