Default Lifetime Brake Guarantee (UK) - good idea?

In the UK, Halfords offer a lifetime guarantee on brake discs and pads (called "Brakes4Life"). You buy your brakes and discs from Halfords who also fit them (and check everything related on your vehicle). After that, whenever you need new discs or pads, Halford replace them free of charge. This guarantee can be transferred with the vehicle when it' sold.

I think the discs are made by "Pagid".

Does anyone think this is a good idea - or is it best to stay with Authorised Dealer/Independant Specialist?

It depends....Suggest you Google "Brakes4Life" (I did) and read some of the posts. Basically, pads and discs are long wearing items with ordinary driving. I routinely have gotten 50K miles from pads and sometimes as much as 100K miles. Never had disc wear out from normal wear and tear.
Having said the above, I have a problem with a rear caliper that did not always retract fully upon parking brake release causing extreme pad wear, which was not noted by any "warning tags" on the OEM discs. At 37K miles there was a sudden loss of pad surface causing the disc to be heavily scored. This will require new pad, caliper and disc. I am replacing same with much cheaper aftermarket components.

Cheers for the advice. I'll stick with a specialist when the time comes.

What's not to like about bait and switch? Bring you in check the brakes and you rubber suspension stuff needs replaced according to their 'inspection'...

Define lifetime ??

Is it the average amount of time an owner keeps a vehicle ?

Is a lifetime a certain amount of mileage ?

Read the fine print in this offer buyer beware in my opinion

Read their web site. It says pads or shoes are free after you buy the first set.
It does not cover discs/rotors, or any other part.
It does NOT say that labor is free for installing the replacements, just that the replacement pads are free, and that they must do the installation work.

So, they put in $20 pads (their cost is maybe $5), and give me another set free in a year when they wear out, but then charge me another $100 for the installation.
Nice business model, get repeat customers for free pads, and keep charging them labor.

Seeing how infrequently the pads and rotors are changed, along with "you should stick with OEM on a Jag", I don't see much benefit to this. Penny wise and pound foolish.
