Default Losing coolant

Coolant level on a 2013 has been dropping recently, requiring I add 8-10 ounces every 7 - 10 days. I want to pass this
off as normal, though it is a new and not something I have had to do in the past. Thoughts? I'm still under warranty so
my inclination is to bring it in.

Thanks

If you are under warranty go to your closest dealer now. If in fact you have a bad pump it swill be replaced under warranty

The engine has 7000 miles on it, replaced 11/17, so a water pump failure seems somewhat unlikely, though anything is possible I suppose, and I'll probably frop
it off if for no other reason than they do a bang up job of cleaning the car while in their possession. I was curious if any others find the need to add coolant
on a somewhat regular basis.

8 oz. is to much and means some sort of leak. Have my 2012 now for 4 years and have only added maybe an oz. when I first got it. Never touched it since and check it every week. Take it in.

May I ask the reason your engine was replaced on a 2013 Car?

The engine might have been replaced, but that wouldn't necessarily mean that the water pump or any part of the cooling system was touched. I had my engine replaced several years ago before I even purchased the car, but the original water pump was reused and has since been replaced 3 times. Always leaked some coolant each night. As others have said, get it replaced under warranty. They are a known issue.

Agree, it really doesn't matter what had been done and is pointless to argue that it ain't what it was until you get in there and find out.

Kind of like SKF's bearing training. The #1 cause if bearing failure is improper installation.

True, but since it was a long block I'd assume (presume?) they wouldn't go through the hassle of disassembling ancillary components and then replace them
with used parts, but I've been surprised before.

If we are going to speculate, we would be better severed to presume the new engine came with the outdated pump design.
Or something was not connected properly with the existing cooling system.

I remember reading somewhere of a 2014 XK owner replacing his water pump. That being said, I'm certain that most of our XK water pumps will be needing the absolute latest version sooner or later.

Yep and I'm about to buy a June 2015 registered (May 2015 produced XK Dynamic R) and it has been confirmed that mine doesn't have the newest iteration of the water pump, as don't have quite a few F-types out there. This in itself seems weird since the last iteration of the pump came out in Sept 2014 (IIRC?).

I can only think they were tooled up for the older pump and just carried on, not issuing a recall (that would have hurt the brand) and dealing with repairs in warranty as a cheaper fix...like most companies run by accountants and lawyers sadly.

Also my old XK100 had Jaguar replace the engine in 1999 at a cost of £6750 (I still have the receipt for that) they used all of the original ancillary parts, water pump, plugs, coils, thermostat, airbox and water pump...ours is not to reason why? But also appreciate that some of those old nikasil lined engines are still out there in daily use without issue. The same situation with the timing chains/slippers I believe there were 4 variants of that.

Hell I think if they could reuse the coolant they would have!

I believe the biggest concern with replacing the water pump is for any collateral damage to any of the fragile plastics. Just about the entire cooling system is integrated with these plastic parts that are easily disturbed. What a way to design a cooling system!

Yes Mary, anything is possible. My particular engine replacement came in at a whopping $51,803.00, and to be honest, I couldn't say for sure what that did or did not include. The beast will go in for oil and a serious cleaning in November, at which time I'll have them dig around.

Have similar issues with my 2011 XK. Water pump was replaced by dealer about 10 days ago, including some recommended plastic parts nearby. Now, a tank load of miles later I still note some coolant smell and the coolant level seems to continue very slowly to go down.

However, neither before nor after the repair I needed to replace coolant due to loss. Before the water pump replacement the coolant level decrease was approx. 3 oz per 1000 miles. Now after the repair I still not sure how much the loss rate really is or if it stabilizes at some point (due to all air out of system).

Update: Coolant outlet pipe, and they threw in an auxiliary radiator feed pipe for good measure.

Thanks for the update! Do you have the part numbers to be sure which pipes we are talking about?
