Default Loud Whining Noise Upon 1st Startup in the Morning

2007 XK 114,000 miles. Upon first starting the car in the morning I have been hearing a loud whining noise which I believe is attributable to the secondary air induction pump (C2P15958) going bad. Has anyone here had this problem? The noise dissipates quickly and I haven't experienced any drivability issues. Is it necessary to have this fixed? How much do you think it will cost? I've seen the pump offered on line for $318.53 but I have no idea how difficult the labor would be.

I would suspect the hydraulic power steering pump before and vane air pump. The hydraulic pump will whine if it lost it's prime. Turn the steering wheel next time it does it. If the pitch changes or the wheel hesitates then you know your culprit. Even then I wouldn't worry about it until you get drive ability issues. Possibly change the oil etc. before condemning the pump.

Vane air pumps seldom fail in auto applications. Just not enough pressure, dirt or RPM to cause the vanes to wear or fail. You'll typically hear the bearings before anything else. Possibly you have a tensioner that's going out. They can be diagnosed by replicating the fault with the hood open or it's easier to pop the belts and spin each idler to see which is rough of noisy.

Somebody has to say it. Is your spouse in the car when you start it up? That's where I hear most of the whining at startup. Mine doesn't go away though.

That's it. I'll see myself out.

Sounds like a small jet engine. Its normal and not failing. Youre just tuned into the noise now. Its always been there and only does it on cold starts. Not all noises are bad, or abnormal

The difference between a jet engine and a co-pilot is the engine stops whining when you shut it down.

Noise was being caused by bad Secondary Air Injection Pump. Part of the emissions system. Part cost over $500 plus 3 hour labor charge. Front bumper had to come off to get to it.

Ouch. Guess you had it right, from the beginning.
Cheaper than replacing the copilot!
