Default Navigation update DVD question

Just purchased a 2007 XK with 27 K miles. It appears to have the original DVD discs for the nav system and I'm thinking about upgrading to the new ones that came out this year (2010-2011). I've heard that some ( or all ) of these discs have firmware updates along with map updates. Does anyone know if ALL new discs have firmware updates or do some just contain map updates? How do I know if I'm getting a disc that will recognize the firmware update I need and apply it?

I upgraded my 2008 XK Nav unit to the 09-10 discs awhile back. That set did conduct a firmware upgrade at the same time it installed the new maps. The good news is that it did the upgrade automatically during the map install process and the whole thing was seamless.

I do suggest leaving the car running during the install (Only takes a few minutes)

You refer to firmware updates, what specifically do you get? Are there any additional features, such as finding a location by phone number? I have that in my Range Rover Sport and find it quite handy, as well as, easy to use.

Thanks...

I did a 2010 navigation upgrade too to get the firmware updated, not just newer roads etc.

The new firmware seems to do a better job of calculating the routes (not that difficult really).
My previous 2006/7 software seemed to love obscure little roads and annoyingly if I missed a turn it just rerouted (without telling me) rather than getting me to do a simple U-turn.

Still not as good as my cheapo TomTom though.

From my perspective, the apparent firmware upgrade is mostly minor stuff. The Nav unit seems to know a few more street names then it did previously (spoken street names were never a strong point of the Jaguar GPS). I also believe the graphics are a little better (might just be the new maps), and the interface seems a bit more responsive. All in all, not much but every little bit helps...

Default Nav update

I just purchased a CPO XK and am interested in updating the nav disc as well. Does the firmware update allow the display to automatically switch from radio to the map? I find it annoying that whenever I'm changing radio stations and want to go back to the nav map, I have to press 2 keystrokes. Most other cars automatically revert back to the map when in navi mode.

Is it possible to make a backup copy of the updated navi disc? I did this with my BMW

That I know of, nearly all discs include firmware updates. As noted most times the firmware is some sort of improvement......but I have see the opposite as well. My Lexus for example, allowed us to "hack" the nav, and let us (errr...... your passenger) enter addresses and dial the phone while the vehicle was in motion. Lexus legal dept. got wind of the hack and a firmware update on newer maps disabled it. At tht point you had to choose if a newer map was more important than data entry while in motion. Many even went as far as to make a hybrid disc with the old firmware, but integrated the new maps and POI's.

I just got the new 2011-2012 disc for my '07 XK from Nalley last week.

As far as changing stations, as long as they are ones in memory your steering wheel controls let you walk through them sequentially without leaving the nav screen. Otherwise you still have to goto "home" an then audio to scan or jump randomly.

There is no debate worth having on the Garmin/TomTom/Jag Nav. The handheld industry left Jag and many, many others in the dust years ago. To buy a Jag update is not "practical" in nearly any way... But I did because I could....

For the coupe, the Nav disk drive is accessible from the trunk behind a hard plastic cover. Just hit the eject button and see what you have...

its in the same spot on the convertible, you just have to be a contortionist to see it under the convertible cover thing.

I bought direct from Denso ($200.00 + $3.95 shipping for both the East and West Coast DVDs). However, I believe they can be had from Nalley Jaguar for a 15% discount. I would have bought from Nalley, but I was suffering from rectal/cranial inversion that particular day and wasn't thinking straight.

Default bond jag

I think I would rather have the "thermal imaging" unit in the XKR from Die another day, instead of a gps.
