Hello all,
I think the day has come and it’s time to think about selling my XKR and looking for something a little more family friendly as out first is about to come. I’d love to keep her as this color combo took me a long time to find, however, my better half is now a stay at home in preparation for the kid and I’d like to bring my overall monthly expenses down.

Here’s what I have:
2010 XKR
Blue body/top, tan interior.
45,xxx miles
Fully Loaded
Will come with fresh oil change (completed every 5K miles) and detailed.

I currently have the car at my home in the garage and due to our very mild and snowless/saltless winter here in Bethlehem PA, I’ve been able to drive pretty often. It was 60 degrees and sunny this past weekend so the top got some exercise!

Here’s my dilemma. My fiancé drove the car to work and home about 6 months ago and was hit coming back into the neighborhood. The at fault driver hit her in the rear driver side wheel and no body damage was done (miraculously!). The car was expertly repaired at a Jaguar/LR indy shop in Flemington NJ Authorized Imported Cars Jaguar & Land Rover Import Foreign Car Specialists. This place is incredible and has a packed garage of classic Jags under full restoration and newer Jags in for routine maintenance. I’m 100% satisfied with the work. As you all know, any kind of accident no matter how mild or severe, puts a ding on the Carfax and value. My dilemma is knowing what the car is now worth with this ding on its Carfax?

If I were to keep the car longer, I would probably be looking to do a bushing job around the car. We all know these are heavy cars and while the car still drive excellent and satisfactory to me, it’s probably about time seeing as this is a 2010.

So Jagforums brain trust, what’s this thing worth on the private market? I’d rather a somewhat quick sale instead of trying to get absolute 100% top dollar and sitting on it for a couple more months.

My car was hit in the rear and suffered body damage. I asked the insurance company for diminished value, and they gave me around $850 for that. My car was worth ~25,000 at the time, so at least in the insurance company's mind, that ding on the Carfax by my calculations is worth 3 1/2 percent

Having just been in the market, I’ll throw in my $.02.

A Jaguar and quick sale is probably mutually exclusive. Unless you go to CarMax, trade it in, or fire sale it, you may be holding the car for a while. Look at CarGurus and their ads list time on market. Mild supply, but low demand.

I looked at a 2010 XKR at my local dealer. Clean CarFax, fully serviced like one would want. Only issue was a pulling dash. 60k miles, Asking was $27k.

I think you are looking at $25k less a few for the CarFax. $22k is probably a good number. Edmunds says $25k in outstanding condition

 

Based on your description it sounds like you had mechanical damage as opposed to body damage. I believe most would look at this as less of a concern and I assume it was fixed correctly. Also what does the carfax say other then accident damage. Then there is the problem of selling a convertible in the winter coupled with a weak demand for Jaguar XK's. Unfortunately you can't hold on to it for a period of time so that means someone will get a great deal. As for price I would got to the various pricing sites and start with the mid price considering condition and disregard the repair. Your car looks great and is a hard to find color combo. That seems low for a 2010 XKR.


When I was looking last year, 2007 and 2008 XKRs were in the 29-30K range. Maybe they have come down since then, but I have to believe a 2010 in nice shape is close to 30K or more.

 

I just bought my XK last week, so I feel these prices are current. I’d suggest the OP see what’s available and do comps. Even at 30k I think the Carfax is a 10% ding.

The $27k 2010 is still at my local dealer.

 

I know pricing varies depending on what part of the country you are in, but having just been on the market this past fall, I can say that a 2010 XKR with that amount of miles and a clean carfax would be right around 30K-35K in DFW area from a dealer...

 

At 22-25K you got me thinking about buying his car!

 

My feedback is don't sell it. You'll not get nearly as much value out of it's sale as it will give you over the next couple years of enjoyment. I guarantee every time you hop in the replacement econobox you'll regret not being able to hop in the Jag. I do just commuting with my son in his '14 Cherokee vs. firing up my '07.

Fiance expecting sounds like you need to sit down and do some realistic financial planning. I don't think ditching the sports car is going to help completely.

 

You're stepping on my sale, lol... I would say to keep it as well, but I think most of us on this forum would say that.

 

My favorite color combination - so wish I needed another Jag in the stable - I think you will really miss it if you sell

 

Do you have pictures of the hit?

I know for me, if I have actual history of the damage, it won't stop me from buying a car.

If there is no mention in the for sale, and I find accident history, I am moving along. If there is accident history, and a mention, I really want to see exactly what happened.

Unfortunately, pricing for quick sale is a tough one, price it to low, and people will pass thinking it is a scam, or something undisclosed that is wrong with it.

The other problem, the lower you go, the more you get low balled even lower.

I think the color combination is going to be in your favor, deep blue is quicker to disappear off the used market.

 

Thanks everyone for your feedback. While it stinks to sell, I can always buy and will probably buy another when the better half goes back to work in a couple of years. Our current circumstances do permit me to keep no problem but at this point in time, I'm really trying to minimize all expenses to the absolute minimum.

I just did a quick search on CarGurus for a 10' vert with less than 60K miles and you get three cars. The cheapest is a red exterior, tan interior vert with 42K miles on it with accident (Frame damage reported) and the dealer is looking for $29K. Everything else is north of $30K and no blue/tan cars for sale. My hope was to get around $26K for it, give or take.

 

I would adjust that search to 80k miles and below. While certainly a difference, many institutions will only finance a car with 80k or less. See what you’re competing against.

Also, it’s still dead of winter in most US. Not prime convertible season so prices may be softer now.

 

Thanks, dsd and good suggestion. I didn't realize many banks would only finance a car with less than 80K on it? I guess we do learn something new everyday.

Like I mentioned above, I do have the means to hold onto the car or even keep it so I don't have a problem until prime time spring convertible season to put her on the market.

 

Spring will up the price a couple of grand.

 

I'd still just hold onto it. If it doesn't owe you anything and you don't owe anything on it, leaving it rest in the garage isn't hateful. You'll know it's history and your little one will grow up knowing what a cool ride it is.

I still have my first '68 Fairlane fastback. Bought it in '91 for $3500 with 32k miles on it. Currently sitting at 38k. Still smells like new inside and is quiet enough going down the road at 55 mph with all the windows open to hear birds chirping. It doesn't matter what happens to my life, I know I can walk down and talk to my favorite car. No regrets and it doesn't owe me anything, nor I it.

What's your honest expectation to find the exact car you want 5 or 10 years down the road? These things are going to be like the X100's, worn out old news or way overpriced and undervalued regardless of mileage. If it gets sold it'll be a distant would have, should have memory.

 

Dump the woman.
Keep the car.

 

And if you decide to sell, and are going to replace it, my suggestion: trade it in. For sure. I think that the trade-in with these cars is, relatively, a good move. Yes, It's less than a private party sale, but not that much less, and I'd hate to have to private party the car.

Like you, I've got a 2010 XKR with about 45K miles. When I drove across the country last year I actually got sorta-close on a 2014 XKR --I stopped by that Jag dealer in Wichita that had a 2014 XKR vert that had only 3800 miles on it-- and their offer for my car was $29,500. For sure, it was a year earlier and the car had 12K fewer miles, but there you go. (They wouldn't budge, at all, on price, so no deal for me). Do with that what you will.

Also, I too cruise autotrader and the like to get an idea of valuation, and it seems to me that the private sale cars languish (there's some poor guy who's got a 2012 French Blue XKR-S vert and it's been on for like a year). Here's one for reference:

I'd list at $31,000. I agree with above posters that lowballing yourself would backfire, and wouldn't lead to a speedy sale. I'd take the first real offer over $27K.
