Default This is a new one....(Glove Box)

My 2007 XK convertible was parked outside my office all day in the sun. After work I opened the passenger door to place something on the passenger seat and saw something strange on the seat. It was a coiled metal spring. Upon further observation I saw that the entire "push button" mechanism for the glove compartment had apparently "exploded" and there was a gaping hole where the plastic push button and lock cylinder had been. I tried to reassemble it but it looks like it has to be replaced. Part C2P6222SEP. No idea how much it will cost to install. Lucky no one was seated in the passenger seat when the part failed. Anyone heard of this before?

Surely it was not a thief breaking in? (No, I have never seen anybody talking about this...)

Heat expansion most probably.
We found this in Europe last year on the bikes.
My friend bought a new flip front helmet for the trip, worked fine over here, temp hit 40 degrees in Sweden, couldn't open the front of the helmet.
When the cooler evening came around, it worked just fine.

When I was shopping for my XK, I ran across one that had the glove box button missing. Maybe the same issue. I passed on that car - there were too many little issues like that with it to make me feel comfortable.

That is the lock assembly for the glove box that has broken and popped out. I had the same happen to me, however I was pressing the button at the time. It is all plastic of course. The whole glove box will need to be removed to install the replacement. Part price was $125.00, needed to purchase the whole lock assembly, and labor was for 3/4 hour-since I had the indie fix the dropping glove box door while he had the glove box out... Fixed 2 items at one time!

Default Lock cylinder

Was it necessary to replace the cylindrical lock with the keyhole or just the plastic button assembly? The lock cylinder popped out but seems to be intact

Something tells me it was just the plastic button assembly, but I honestly can't remember. All I remember was being a little shocked at the price for the piece!

Default Glovebox Lock

My 2007 XK Convertible glove box lock spring also spontaneously exploded this year (2018). The lock assemebly had popped off and the spring was sitting on my passenger seat. The Jaguar dealer in Madison NJ told me it would cost $800+ to fix because they need to replace the entire glovebox. I put it back together without the spring and the lock assembly just sits in place for now, but it falls out when accellerating quickly into highway traffic, etc. Apparently a plastic tab broke off in the assmebly and that is the cause. They would have to replace the glovebox because the plastic tab broke spontaneously due to spring pressure over years. They should have made that tab out of metal. If anyone has a better solution to repair this tab, please let me know. Thanks!

Make a tab like the old one using JB Weld. Maybe a bit of wire reinforcing would benefit also.

You should be able to source a complete glove box from a breaker much more reasonable than the dealer. Then just swap locks.

Default Don’t have to replace entire glovebox

You only have to replace the push button C2P6222LEG different part number depending on the color.

I'm resurrecting this thread to ask if there's a procedure to properly install the lock cylinder in a new lock housing. I'm concerned about how the small disc with the slot connects with the cylinder.

Since some have said removing the glove box, or reinstalling it, seems to be pain I may have my indie shop do the repair.

Need some help from anyone who installed a new glove box lock assembly.

I've fixed the dropping lid problem using a zip tie to secure the cable from the piston.

Now I need to fix the problem of the latch not securing the lid. I can't figure out where to secure the ends of the spring on the arm going from the lock mechanism to the glove box latch.

Also, with how I have inserted the lock into the assembly, the key makes a quarter turn right and left, but when the assembly is in place there is no push in the push button.

Hoping these photos will help.

If you're lucky, the answer will be in the Workshop Manual, which is available in the Sticky Threads section at the top of this Forum's home page.

No luck there unfortunately. Only how to remove and reinstall the glove box. Nothing in the Handles, Locks, Latches and Entry Systems section about the glove box lock.

I've removed the glove box and installed the new lock assembly following the photos and info in this 2015 thread.

The door won't latch properly, and the arm connecting the latch with the lock basically flaps all over. It appears that the spring is not doing whatever it is supposed to do.

Any thoughts?

Another request for help from anyone who has disassembled the latch assembly. I thought the arm to the lock wasn't properly seated inside the box.
Of course, despite carefully opening the box the spring went sproing.
I think the spring end connects around the post of the latch but I can't get it to stay in place.

What a complicated little mess for something that should have been so simple.
