For dash protection from cracking, etc I installed a UV protective coating on the inside of the windshield, cost about $125. There is no tinting with this coating and it is completely legal. I also use a marine uv leather protectant on the dash, applied every six months or so. Finally, I do have a screen protector which I mount whenever (seldom) parking in bright sunlight.
I have had no worries, problems with the plastic themostat housing on my '07. However, I have in my possession a spare housing which is easy for any home mechanic to install. I keep it in my spare tire well.
