Default Newbie - 2011 XKR..

Hey guys,

Just got done introducing myself on the board:-

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/n...13/#post824344

Wanted to introduce myself on here too and have a few 'technical' questions for all XKR owners/fanatics

I did some reading before purchasing the vehicle but did not get updated advice from owners, I am aware maintaining those cars is not quite cheap but are they 'unreliable' in anyway? Any known issues out there?

I would love to keep this car for a long time but have planned to only keep it as long as the warranty stays 11/15.

Has anyone on here chipped their XKR or downsized the s/c pulley? Just speculating for now, not intending on modifying any time soon

Thank you in advance, great to be here.

Moe

Welcome! It's a fine car. Take care of it and it should last forever.

P.S. If I ever leave the US - I'm moving to Qatar.

Welcome again!

These newer XK's have been very reliable, with only the odd isolated issue. Haven't heard of a single common problem, and many claim it's the best vehicle they've ever owned.

I once considered an ECU flash for extra power, but in reality you'll likely find you can't use the power it already has. Several Jag 5L S/C owners have done flashes with varying degrees of perceived improvement and satisfaction. The most popular flash is from ETG, and doing a forum search will locate several threads.

I push the winter mode button even in warm weather if the road is wet. For street driving - I think it would be near impossible to tell the difference with a tune. Here in the US if you press the far right pedal for 4 seconds from a stop you're going to be far above most speed limits.

Also something to consider - what good is the power if you can't stick it to the ground? Sliding just makes the car slower.

How about some super racy style tires instead of a tune?

Still needs some wider wheels IMO. I have Michelin PS2 (the new ones) and would still like more grip... would love some 295 or 305's in the back

Make sure you keep the battery well charged, and replace it if you get repeated issues - it is not uncommon for the XKR to exhibit some odd symptoms with low battery power, even if there is enough juice to start the car. A particular favourite is the infotainment touch screen sticking on the "XKR" logo page and not displaying the user interface. The only short-term fix is to stop the car, lock it, unlock it & restart it - the infotainment doesn't power off until the car is locked.

And that's the other hint: always lock the car, even if it's parked in a garage, and if you have keyless entry, keep the key at least a few metres away from the sides & rear of the car. That ensures the car's systems are completely shut down & don't draw power.

WoW...

Thank you guys for the info..

Having driven it around for two days, i will definately overlook programming or any performance mods, it seems very difficult to put the stock power to the ground as is. Traction control kicks in even when overtaking or downshifting sometimes. Tires are definately a good idea, i love the stance as is with the 255/285 F/R but my tires seem to be somewhat dry. They are mid-2009 production and are the factory tires that came with the car (Dunlop SP-Sport). I have the same tires on the Lexus albeit different size (245/40-18 all around), they are super grippy when new but dry up and develop flat spots very quickly, i believe they are a very soft compound. Michelins are great but the PS2s are not available in our local market. A friend has a Lexus IS-F, he installed Pirelli P-Zeros and seems very satisfied. Maybe something to look into soon.

NGARARA - Thank you for the info on power, did not know they were this sensitive, i actually noticed that the dealership left the spare key in the glove compartment. Will remove it when i get back from work.

In all honestly, the Infotainment system and the stock alpine sound system are sub-par from factory. I find navigating the system somewhat annoying. It's also very slow.

Lothar, Pics are in my garage or visit this link https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/n...13/#post824344

R-Rated.. You're more than welcome buddy, swing by sometimes, many direct flights on Qatar Airways, you'll like it here if you come in Winter. You'll also get to drive the Jag haha.

Thanks for the help guys. I'm learning alot already. Feels great to be here.

I have noticed a few issues with the car, sent it over to the dealership and they gave me an appointment on the 27th of October!!

- Steering wheel is off center and vibrates slightly anywhere between 50-80MPH; going to take it for balancing and alignment today to see if this is rectified, if not, tires are going to be the culprit.

- I'm getting a superbly annoying rattle from what seems to be inside the passenger side of the dashboard.

- The A/C does not BLOW enough air for the setting, might be a clogged filter. It's not bad just sound alot louder than it should be for the amount of air it pushes out.

- Getting an air leak from between the driver front and rear window weather strip.

- Seatbelt tensioner makes a ticking noise when accelerating or braking.

Gonna have to wait till the 27th to rectify the latter 4 points stated. I'm also planning to send it tonight to Ziebart to get the interior leather detailed and protected. A light tint won't be a bad idea if they offer me a good deal.

In General i am very happy with the purchase, just needs some time to get used to but i am begining to develop emotions for the Cat haha.

My apologies for a long post.

Another thing that I would consider if I lived in your climate (I'm going to address this next spring before it gets hot here) is alcohol/meth injection. It will retard the timing a little but mostly lower the internal temp quite a bit.

I have a Jag of my own... but would be interested in driving that supra!

Hahaha Supra is in CO, it's a much shorter flight if that's what you wanna do haha.

Meth injection would be a great idea but that would definitely void your warrantee, I rarely drive the car hard especially in hot weather. Those engines seem well built and reliable from the research I did .. Care to object?😃

Its completely and easily reversible if need be. In the US it helps tremendously since our gar is 10-15% corn... It's also one of those conversations about "making" power vs. "Freeing" up power. Meth makes the engine more reliable and safer - although when I've done it in the past to turbo cars they definitely pulled harder.

If that supra is modded; you're crazy not to do this!

Maybe a PM convo... but did you move from the US to Qatar? I said it jokingly but I've actually thought about going there myself for few years...

Where did you get the idea that the stock engine even needs any help dealing with hot climates or ethanol?

Bruce, I'm not saying it is bad, my position is that it will make it better and even relieve stress from the engine.

There is no engine - even more so when boosted - that won't benefit from addition all cooling in hot climates.

I think it introduces a failure point to a system already carefully designed to handle the heat and that's covered under warranty. Methanol injection is typically a solution to a problem created when a forced induction's engine is running higher boost than the intercooling system can safely handle, and to allow it to make more power through that higher boost, advanced timing and leaner air/fuel ratio than it could otherwise. None of this applies to the XKR. I think this is a case where you're better off to leave well-enough alone, and drive it a bit easier under the hottest conditions.

I use methanol injection on a track car that's boosted to 60% more power than stock, and intercooling limited, to help control heat and detonation under motorsport conditions. That's a case where there is a need for it. I run the Jag under the same conditions without needing it, and engine management has a number of measures it implements if and when required.

I don't think i would do Meth injection on the Jag, the dealer here are very anxious to cancel your warrantee as is, if they catch something like that i assure you they'll do just that. I think the Jag handles itself pretty well as is. In this intense heat, I wouldn't recommend pushing any engine.

I actually got a kit for the Supra but haven't installed it yet, i intend on bringing the vehicle over and am worried about the availability of methanol in Qatar.

Regarding Qatar; I'm actually a Qatari local.. I have my brother and uncle living in the US and i go down there quite frequently for my business and work (i do type-ratings, and training on Boeing C17/C15s military cargo jets - I'm an Aeronautical engineer working for the Qatari Royal Airforce in conjunction with the US base here).

I'm serious come down here for a visit whenever you can and check it out, i'll be glad to take you around - You'll have a lot of fun.

My apologies for hijacking the thread....

Looks like from your signature that you must do some off-roading?

I've owned my 2010 for a year now and have decided to get a performance tune done by Eurocharged Performance next week in Wash DC area. They claim an 85bhp increase with a new pulley. I will have a before and after dyno so I will post the results for all to see.

Yes sir, we do alot of desert driving especially in Winter where we camp out for a 4 month season.

From my signature, the last two land cruisers are the ones i take off-road. The other two are two valuable to risk haha.

Here are some pics.. White truck is mine

I'm very interested in the dyno reports. Let us all know how it works out. I can't wait to see the results.
