Default No need to pay high dollars for oil change

Today I learned there is no need to pay high dollars for an oil change from a Jaguar dealer.

As most of you know I own a 2009 Jaguar XKR. Last time (3600 miles ago, 24 months ago) I took the Jag to the local dealer (60 miles to El Paso, Tx) for an oil change. Cost $135.00

I bought my own Castrol Edge 5w20 oil at Walmart $22.66 for the 5 qt jug and $7.98 for each qt thereafter. I paid $10.99 for a K&N HP-1014 oil filter.

Today, I took the Jag to Jiffy Lube who has done all of our cars (5 cars) for the last 5 to 7 years. Cost was $24.99 for them using my oil and filter. They took their time, with 3 guys on the car, one underneath, 2 on top, and in 20 minutes I was on my way.

I spoke with the manager who has been with this Jiffy Lube for many years. It was an easy change no different than any other car they get into their shop.

It was a simple process, remove the skid plate, drain the oil, remove and replace the oil filter, fill the oil and go.

I see no reason to pay a dealer $145.00 (current price at Garcia Jaguar in El Paso, TX) to change oil and replace a filter, just because of a Jaguar brand.

Today's service was very professional and they provided a high quality job.

Today was another good day of self education that using a dealer for the common ordinary maintenance is not needed or required for the Jaguar brand. Today, they even checked all air pressure in the tires, vacuumed the inside, checked all lights, windshield wipers, and fluids. They added to the windshield washer fluid which was a bit low. What deal, $24.99 out the door. Why do it yourself for that price.

On my '10 XKR I use the linked electric pump to extact the oil. I did purchase an additional clear plastic tubing to fit the suction pipe in the XKR from Home Depot. When the oil is warm it takes 2 - 3 minutes to pull all of it out from the top. For me it is not so much the $$$ but, the fact that the nearest dealer is 2 hours of roundtrip from my house.

BTW - I also decided to change the oil in my Stingray even though I have free oil changes by Chevrolet. It is because I decided to replace the 5W-30 oil with the Mobil 1 15W-50 oil.

Oh I forgot to mention by timing my dealer oil change with my annual NYS inspection the dealer doesn't charge me the $25 inspection fee and does the inspection. So now I'm at $29 5 qt jug (buy 2 because I need 7.6 qts. ) so we are at $50 and $30 filter and $25 inspection and I got $105 vs. $120 dealer price.

If you can find the SLX oil it is no different than a normal change. You can get a case of six on ebay for $60 + $12 shipping guess what we need seven quarts so now you have to buy two cases for $144 plus $15 for the filter. By your third oil change you will have enough left over from the previous two to do the third one.

If you are not under warranty and can find an oil that meets the extremely specific Ford spec go for it just be mindful it will not have the fancy glow in the dark additive.
